Not sure an oil filled will cope with that sort of space ,i bought a 3kw space type heater which raises the temp in the garage ok ,24'x12' can be turned down to 1.5kw and thermostatic controlled......3kw also got a 400w and 800w halogen which is not therm controlled and not recommended for controlled switching either (i use in the utility )....look on ebay the machine mart style are cheaper there

the cheapest in electric would be a couple of tubular heaters providing theres no draught .it will still be expensive to heat though they consume 100 watt per foot in length . so a 4foot would consume 400 watts and a 2foot 200 watts

I looked at some tubular heaters ,they weren't that cheap to buy .....ended up with the halogen just for frost protection in the utility(washing machine)...halogen was £7.99 and 400w and 800w so i purchased at least as a stop gap

what ever you use it will be expensive to run i think i would use a fan heater as it would circulate the air around the garage try to find a low wattage heater.

My workshop is 22ft x 16 ft and have been using both infra red and a 2kw fan heater.
The infra does very little to raise the temp, the fan heater will raise the temp but takes a bit of time and on full power, both would cost a fortune to run long term even to keep the place at 5 degrees.
I am unsure what machinery you have but the cold won't affect most things, it's only us humans who are affected, my spot has been down to minus 5 most mornings recently and everything still ok.
It's nice to walk into a warm workshop in the morning but not so nice when the leccy bill comes... the lucky folk have their workshop joined to the house and can run a small radiator from the central system.

To clarify my earlier post ,i don't heat the garage for the machines, only for my own comfort when i'm working and i use the 3kw fan,the utility room houses the washing machine and recently i've had the feed pipes freeze so i purchased the lower powered quartz halogen to prevent freezing in a much smaller room 12'x8' on the nights when the temp is very cold at least until i can relag the pipes and fit an isolating valve for the water supplies....I wouldn't want to pay the electric bill if i was running the heater in the garage to keep it warm when i'm not there,i do switch on fan heater ,go and have a brew then work in a slightly warmer garage....... Breezer what kind of machines do you have in the garage ?are you trying to stop coolant from freezing ?
I've just got the garage kitted out with all the bits I need - lathe, decent drill etc etc and they're mainly the things I'm wanting to look after.
Not so much coolant - more protect the electric motors from getting condensated up.
I did think about putting a dehumidifier in there but most don't work below 5 degrees.

Then I found a 2kw convector heater in the loft, this helps a lot so i bought another one for £20.00, job done, minus 12 outside and 10c in side. I dont pay for my electrick so I leave one on low all the time to keep the edge off the cold and put them both on when I get in to work.
Remember that convector heaters ork by moving air around by convection currents.
I am a happy toasty(ish) convertee.

Quite agree, running halogen or oil filled for long periods are both nearly as expensive as each other.
The only difference is the halogen warms area up quicker, no thermostat and always on or off. The oil filled being thermostatic trips in and out so not on all the time.
My large oil filled on low setting for a small area sheds about same heat (11p hr minus thermostatic trip outs) as two bars on (14p hour (supposed to be 8p/hr)) cheap halogen.
Found a good use last week for my halogen, slap it in your car for 10 mins to defrost.
Just need a multi timer socket.

In our garage and in our caravan I have simply put two straight batten bulb holders on a decent lump of flat wood and wired them in parallel , using 3 core heat resistant flex . I then put a bayonet pygmy bulb of 15 watts in each holder .( you can get then down to 10 watts if you order then specially on line).
The unit in the garage is sat adjacent to the washing machine which is under the dryer shelf ( bit of work top ) we have had minus 13 oC and the machine did not freeze but the big walls icecream chest freezer did get a decent glaze coat on the top glass covers.
The pair of bulbs in the caravan seem to have kept it dry for the last three months .. the seat cushions are stacked on the pulled out double bed slats so nothing is close to the sides .
So far they have been on 24 /7 for almost three months , in this time one of the bulbs blew ( that's why there are two per unit )I purchased a dozen bulb so as to have spares.
This lunch time I turned off theb ones in the garage as we have + 9.7 oC today .
I'll bung up a picture in the next couple of days

Here is what I use to keep damp & frost away from the washing machine in the garage . This was successful in two days of minus 13 oC of frost and the rest of the cool days.
I have the same sitting in the caravan ..It keeps it dry and prevents any drops of water freezing in the water heater area and ice free in the toilet pump ( all systems were drained down and left as stop /plug out )
Basically it is two batten holders wired in parallel carry on the earth for there is an aluminium cover that goes over the bulbs to prevent accidents ... this needs earthing out too.
I have used 2 x 15watt pygmy bayonet bulbs , you can as I said in the previous post use 10 watt ones but you will most likely have to buy them online or pre order them as none of the electrical wholesalers I visited stocked them . Expect to pay around a tenner for 4 holders and 6 mtrs of 3 core heat resistant 3 core flex , then a pound per bulb ( don't forget your spares)

A work mate and I have been discussing this matter and as an ex boating enthusiast he is going to install an Eberspacher heater in his workshop.
They run on diesel so filling it up with red derv won't be too expensive and they can be fitted with a frost stat and timer. Also, they produce a dry heat that can be ducted to specific areas.
I'll add to the thread once he gets it installed

much better to use copper pipe more surface area in contact with the water and heat transfer with copper is better then aluminium

I looked at the Eberspacher , be careful buying off ebay as most are 24 volts .
There was quite a thread on a fishing site I play on by guys who were trying to get them for their boats .
Apparently a guy who " removes " them from the scrapped trucks & sells on the bay just cuts the wires and it's up to you to work out what goes where.
Some guys got all sorts of rubbish sent to them and had big probs getting it sorted .
I contacted an agent for the heater and they were looking at supply only for a brand new one of around £800 a year ago.
I'd be very interested in finding a regular source of guaranteed working or cash back one though.
