Garage door ideas

I got fed up of the up and over door so took it off, sliced it down the middle and hinged it so it opens outwards. Best thing I did, more space internally and a lot less faff going in and out.

Edit, there’s a thread on it, some suggestions from other members in there too.

As per the title, only one door on the garage, an up and over fibre glass panelled metal framed horsman door.

It’s a pain in the backside I’m in and out of it so often, don’t like to leave it open both for weather/the wrong kind of eyes seeing in.

The cheapest option is to somehow use the existing door but I can see this being a potential nightmare/impossibility.

Just wondering if anyone had successfully made their existing up and over door into a side hinged one.

I like a pair of opening doors rather than an up and over, I just use one of mine as access and it can be left locked open about 4 inches to create some air flow, mine also fold right back against the building when open to give max room. https://www.mig-welding.co.uk/forum/threads/garage-extension.88594/post-1291066

Here's my scrap metal ghetto door security bolt part-way through being made for my shed doors.
I decided to make it an unwholesome prospect for some opportunist to try & jimmy the doors.
(I had a suitable piece of rectangular box to be the sliding bolt moved via a screw-in handle in a slot underneath, with a tab that overlies a mate in the padlock box on the LH door. The padlock you have to reach up under the box & hook it through the two tabs so it's shielded from direct attack - a bit like those Forestry Gates).

if you don't want barn doors, you could go roller shutter then put something inside that'll fold out of the way, if it's only to stop people looking in it only needs to be thin/light weight

I did like the curtain idea and it may well do until I have some spare time and money to change the door, I was hoping for a side door but the side wall of the garage is 2 ft ends ground and a new patio

I've got an electric opperated, insulated roller door 5m wide on my garage. I fitted it - made sure the side guides were vertical and parallel. Made sure the side mounts were level and again parallel. After the intial effort to get the thin up and over and into the guides, it's been trouble free for a decade.

I made some simple brackets that span a few sections and engage with mating brackets bolted to the floor - locking pins through each bracket to slow down the door being jemmied upwards.

Security lights everwhere, and next doors dogs seem to help to.

I have an old lining curtain across the back of the roller shutter held up with magnetic hooks onto the roller box but I still try to avoid having the door open, especially if the lights are on inside.

I thought it was a rule that if you had an open garage door, you were inviting people to look inside?

Ignoring the project infant of them, I made something similar for my garage a few years ago.

Fed up with a wonky up and over door and didnt like the look of the roller doors, I made some solid Larch doors with home made T+G infill panels. Hinge pins and a hefty door lock along with security cameras and door sensors for the alarm. I know it wouldnt take a huge effort to get through it if someone really wanted too but hopefully it'll make them seek an easier score elsewhere

I did the same thing with my garage door. So much better.
