This is very impressive. Better for thin stuff obviously but I think laser welding is here to stay.

I wasn't surprised to learn you need a different type of screen for laser welding, though I was very surprised to learn the cost, not cheap if they are dual use, traditional welding and laser.

I wasn't surprised to learn you need a different type of screen for laser welding, though I was very surprised to learn the cost, not cheap if they are dual use, traditional welding and laser.

I had a demo of a hans-g unit and it was just a setting change between welding and ablation (de-rusting), i think it was just a frequency/pulse width change and "scan width" change (basically automatic focus).
That was a £15k+ unit though.

I think they are like Plasma cutters used to be ,,, in ten years time they will be middle isle , but until then the cost / benefit ratio has to be very carefully thought about , the ones Ive seen on you tube all seem to be very well cared for and in a clean environment , and hardly ever knocked off a beer keg while working on a rusty land rover , filling gaps etc etc ,,,, but they wont be going away.

This one isn't. It's $2500. I have followed Josh de Lisle's channel for a long time. He does some great stuff.

The one he used was designed for up to 6mm steel. Considering he was using 10mm it did pretty well.

Well I managed to steal some time this evening to try out the laser welder on some 1mm mild steel. These were my first welds so by no means perfect but blown away by what this can do.

Two pieces cut so started with a good fit up

Several continuous welds front

and back

The main problem was me misaligning to the joint and this is using 1.2mm filler wire whereas 0.8-1.0mm would probably be better.

laser welding certainly will be a lot more common in the future as costs and size both reduce ,,, always interesting to see it done though.
