Galvanising

Following on from my Table build, I’d like to fit a vice but chicken about the thing rusting to death

I’ve got a cast steel vice that’s missing the swivel base. I don’t mind “modifying” it to make it quick release or perhaps even permanent. It only cost £5

If I get it galvanised how much will it cost? And where from

if expensive, ne t option in my head is the galvanising paint in a tin, any recommendations?

If you galvanise the whole thing it won't work as a vice because the galv will be so thick it won't be able to move and the screw will certainly be seized.

Zinga or Galvafroid are the industry standards for single pack zinc rich paint but a better option would be to just paint all the bits that don't move and keep the other bits oiled or sprayed with an anti rust spray.

Make a cover to keep the worst of the weather off it when not in use.

yes I’m being an awkward Bar steward but I don’t mind giving it the once over with “something” every so often

Let it get a bit rusty then oil it, the rust is a little porous so it will hold the oil and protect it from rusting further. For a £5 vice, does it even matter if it rusts away anyway.

could you do a quick detatch mount and put it inside when you dont want it out side ,, wont go walking when your not looking that way either.

I’ll do the prep and nice friend will do a spray n bake with what ever colour is in his gun

What, on all the moving-against-each-other and gripping surfaces? Surely not!

Keep the screw greased (as you should anyway) and it will last years

Lanolin is best. Plaster it in lanolin, it stays for many years and is the most waterproof substance known. Natural and harmless. 99 million trillion sheep can't be wrong.

Bear in mind galvanising is almost exclusively done by weight so you've probably got one of the worst (most expensive things) to galv.

I'd normally drop stuff off at CLH Trailers and get it cost (have a figure of 33p/kg but might be well off as it was a few years ago). But then Chris does send a trailer load per week usually so whatever is added is moot.

@Parm the problem with a nice paint job, is as a vice it won't last and you'll chip a bit off and then back to rust. What about a solid box cover that hinges back out of the way ??
