Thanks both, any of them would do tbh but exactly how do you invoke the knurling? As in what command?

You're basically just cutting a thread....
Produce a slicing surface by surface lofting between two lines (here the lines are 90° offset). Place a cutting tool (triangle) at one end of the surface/knob intersect

Create a path for the cutting tool to follow by splitting the knob with the surface (make sure you create a copy of the knob before doing this)

Use the edge formed as the path for sweep

Mirror that feature...and then circular array it.

I want to have some text on a front panel which is a different colour, but flush with the front face. I can write and emboss it, but now I need to fill it with a new body and colour it as required. How would I do that please?

I would extrude the face in the bottom of the letter up to the surface, you will have 10 new bodies to change the colour to what you want.

Thank you. I have been playing and found that I could extrude the bottom of the embossing up to flush as new bodies. However when I imported that in to slicing, the characters were either 500% magnified or were the correct size separated from the main body depending on import option.

I just did another quick test with it extruded from the original sketch plane and it appears to remain part of the panel. It would also work face down of course as my panel has to be printed that way up.

Undoubtedly but it needs to be part of the main Fusion design, so that it can be shared as is.

Not sure if you got this resolved, the method to extrude the embossed face works but only for flat embossing. This technique should work for all:

Before embossing making a copy of the body to be embossed, perform the emboss on the original body, then perform a boolean combine to cut the embossed body (tool) from the copy (target) - ensure keep tools is selected.

Then export in 3mf format and import into slicer...

I did an experiment... One plate with three options:

1) Text on the 'base' plane, the same thickness as the plate plus .01mm **.
2) Text on a plane 1.5mm down, drawn up by 1.501mm.
3) Surface text of 1.5mm extrusion.

Strangely they all seem to be attached where they should be.

** To make the text visible in the slicer, the flush setting led to the display of it "shimmering". It is a couple of hours to print so won't bother doing that. However it seems OK and if I were to print it face down, the extra 0.01mm should be irrelevant I assume? Ignoring the unwanted surface text of course.

I did an experiment...

Two things need to be done to get the effect you're after:

1) Cut away the original body where the text will be;
2) Create text-shaped bodies.

You can do it by a combination of embossing (or extruding) to provide the cutout, and then either extruding the original text again or extruding the base of the cutout to create new bodies that represent the text, but the slickest way is as @daedalusminos describes above.

It sounds like you are only doing (2).

If you don't also do (1), you will end up with overlapping bodies and you're in the lap of the gods as to how your slicer handles it, or if it will even see the text at all. The 'shimmering' you describe is probably because the bodies are overlapping.

For some reason I can't emboss it. Vague error bottom right.

Try embossing one at a time - it could be the font causing the error. Try changing that to Arial - if it isn't already.

Just got to figure out how to add text to it...

Go to Construct.. Offset Plane and draw a new plane a suitable distance away from the face you want the text on:

Go to Create, New Sketch and click on the new offset plane you just created. Go to Create... Text and type your text in, adjust size and position:

You should end up with this:

Than go to Create.. Emboss and select the text as your Sketch Profile, and the face of the cup as your Face in the dialog box - you can either emboss or 'deboss' depending whether you want the lettering proud or...

On my boat dash, I need to use some locating tabs to positively align all three pieces. My thoughts are a "lollipop" shape on the centre panel and corresponding "sockets" on the wider panels. Am I going to need to enlarge the "sockets" a smidge or should they click together printed the same size?

It depends how well your printer is calibrated....your slicer should be able to add locating/joining features, but it's a good idea to perform a test print on a smaller part to determine fit

On my printer, I tend to print with zero clearance (i.e. the hole is the same size as the bit that goes into the hole). They just snap into place. As @daedalusminos has said though, it depends on the printer so worth a test run.

What I tend to do is print sockets (holes) in both pieces and then have a separate butterfly key that glues into both. Something like this:

Note the fillets on the sharp corners just to give it the best bet of fitting well:
