Dont bother with the dub aircooled transaxle, its a dead end, they fall to bits with real power, and the porches cost a fortune to strengthen up.
Audi is a pretty strong unit, un1 from the renaults (although I heard theyre rare and hard to find in the uk) until you start bolting v8's with slicks on at which point the two piece mainshaft shows it origins after about 300hp and breaks, and other options. Research on the mid engined gt40 kitcar forums, they'll have been there and got the broken transaxle tee, and things probably have moved on since I did my looking several years ago, maybe the lexus transaxle or something
The above transaxles are already set up for mid engined duty, so wont require you to flip the pinion in the diff and have to set the mesh back up etc. Though eyeballing one for another project (un5 in a vw bus offroader a mad friend was considering) it looks like you can flip them if your motor goes the wrong way round
Know nothing about rotation of direction issues though, I've always been trying to bolt v8's to them

Ive always wanted to do a AWD with a mid mounted v8 lambo style. But, what donor??? the renault quadra is set up for a fwd car, and I cant think of much else with a transaxle that will let you take a drive off for a front diff...
Crack that, and you'll have a unique build...

A start there would be looking at CRX front bits, like springs. One of the simplist conversions was the FIAT X19. Complete front end from a 128 in the back with some links to replace the steering. Then another suspension set up front with softer springs and shockers. Unfortunately the body builders didn't protect the steel very well, so few are left. Pretty in an angular way.
As for you Evo nuts. BMW got way over 1000hp out of a 1500cc stock block in the F1 turbo days. Saw a nice pic of one on test (from a 2002 Turbo) the exhaust was cherry red and they had extra bolts to stop the head lifting....
Aparently they scoured the yards to find nice used blocks that had settled in, rather than new ones.

Of course but not quite as simple or as comparable as you make it sound.
Before the advent of 'rocket fuel' later in the turbo F1 era outputs were topping out at about 6-700 BHP. It took fuels which did not resemble petrol in any way, to allow super high boost pressure to be run without causing terminal detonation. Well, that and sophisticated engine management systems. Thats when the mad power became possible. Even then it must be remembered that these motors revved to upto 16,000 rpm in some cases, used exotic materials like beryllium, custom made turbo's, etc, etc.
Power bands were about 1000 rpm, so power could jump from 400 to 900 or more in that time and the qualifying motors, which were the ones producing the headline numbers lasted about 5 laps before they were done, sometimes beyond even rebuilding because the block had distorted.
Considering the Evo motor is a road car engine and even with 1000 BHP can be driven to Tesco, it is quite impressive. The drag boys are getting much higher power but run into the same issues as the F1 crowd, so they go beyond road use and become pure race cars with engine rebuilds after every meeting.
BTW, they used blocks from normal production which were just left outside the factory to stabilise for a few months.
See above ! It all depends on budget, durability and reliability.
Friend of mine into MR2 turbo's was splitting blocks trying to run 800 to 1000 bhp, and even then needed lots of NOS to get there. Even then you wouldn't want to use it on the road.

Actually ALL petrol engine exhaust manifolds will glow red when producing max or near to max power. Petrol exhaust gas temp is upto about 900 deg C depending on mixture ratio, typical is 850 deg C. Thin walled tubular race manifolds are the most dramatic as they heat and cool relatively quickly.
They will not however become transparent ! Thats just an illusion caused by area's of slightly varying temperature, either within or area's of different cross sectional area's.

It was done many years ago with a BMC 6 cylinder setup out of a Wolesley 2200, and Land Rover axles shortened I think.

Plus there was the show on Discovery where they had to build various themed cars, wasn't there? English programme with two teams each week, I'm sure one of the episodes had one like that.
I like the idea of running a big block harley motor in the front of a mini, running out to a porsche transaxle at the rear. HD motors are pre-unit, i.e. motor & gearbox are separate to begin with. I'll worry about cooling the motor when it's running (and after I've won the lottery...)
