I suspect that once LH realised he didn't have a realistic chance of winning, and due to having probably underestimated how badly he'd been affected by the after-effects of Covid, that he was quite happy to stay third and give VB second place in the driver's championship.

For all the Bravado and putting on a Brave face, the fact that George actually did so well until the Radio intervened, did IMHO sort of send shockwaves round Mercedes and to some extent reduce Lewis salary demands. It certainly altered the Dynamic around Mercedes. but I misjudged what my body was capable of because my mind was elsewhere.
Racers are a completely different breed to you and I, and if they can pass whatever medical test they need to fulfill, they'll be on the grid no matter what. They exist to race. 'Sportsmanship' has nothing to do with it. Just take a look at the MotoGP guys and the state some of them ride in. I agree with you, the majority of sportsman and sportswomen are dedicated to their sport and would never shy away from performing because of illness or injury, and being sports fans, we've seen many examples of this. However, in this case, what did LH have to prove? He's the 2020 world champion, Mercedes are the constructor champions, and he potentially could have stopped VB getting P2 in the championship. By his own admission, he was completely beaten up by the end of the race and "lucky to be alive" - surely a driver of his calibre should have known how much racing in a GP tales a toll on his body?

That he's still the top dog, especially after George Russell's stellar performance the previous weekend. You underestimate just how insanely competitive elite sports men and women are at that level.
Don't see how he could have stopped VB getting second spot in the championship. The maths don't support that. VB finished the 2020 season with 201 points, MV with 189. Even if Lewis had overtaken VB for second place, VB would still have retained second place in the championship. You can have any permutation of LH, VB and MV in the first 3 places and VB would still be second in the championship. The only way for VB to lose 2nd place would be for him to drop well down the order, in which case LH could conceivably have helped VB by taking points off MV. Your assertion simply doesn't stack up.
