Ford V6 ID Please

A mate of mine has a Ford V6 engine sat in his garage, and he'd like some info. What he does know

1) Was out of an automatic
2) Thinks it's a 3 litre
3) Has twin choke carb
4) Can't find an engine number
5) Has "HV" stamped on the block

Any help much appreciated!

Sounds like an Essex v6.

Only the early ones? Not all of them then?

Well, that's something I've learned today!

apart from the fibre timing gear oh and head gaskets and broken con rods when pushed a bit hard with 180 - 200hp and 7 ton behind

parallel twin choke but both chokes open together, 38dgas iirc
engine number is on the top of the block by gearbox mount on righthand bank
HV----- might actually be HY

the b on each piston stood for---- not another B******D

There was a company that used to make 24v heads for the Essex v6. I think they were developed for the racing series.

I have driven many a V5 !! with the 6th con rod not connected coz it snapped and a jubilee round the crank to keep the oil pressure up!! drove one on 5 back from the black sea up and over to the alps and another rod broke on the climb up to austria border luckily that one didnt damage the block, so as we carried spare con rod and piston, we changed it in yugoslavia on the side of the road in about 3hrs and continued on 5cyl back to uk.

I think I still have the broken con rod somewhere, it was on the wall in workshop 30odd yrs ago
we used to have little black stickers of conrods and pistons ----- on drivers door----like the spitfire pilots had swastika as mementos on cockpit

HEHE that reminds me the rally car navigator was a belgium guy and he said he would try and get help and so walked off down the road so Nigel and I set to and had the head and sump off in a few minutes, and was cleaning the block when the nav came back he started talking to me but couldnt see me and then he looked between the bonnet and inner wing of the tranny, down through the centre cyl bore as per the photo below and our eyes met, coz I was under the van looking up !

he shouted jumped in the van grabbed his bag and ran off !! shouting something about bandits and mountains--------- well it is bosnia now !! BUT the mad thing was we where in calais on ferry before he got to belgium.!

Glad to see a few experts on the subject . I have a turbo technics v6 twin turbo out of a 4x4 Sierra , I am not sure whether that's a 2.8 or a 2.9. ! definitely not an Essex engine. Is there an easy way of telling them apart ? Was going to build a silly P100 4x4 pickup but never found one clean enough.

Not sure about the way to tell them apart, I'm sure norm will help with that, but the later ones were cologne I believe?
