The Essex engine had the distributor on the front of the block, the Cologne on the rear if I recall.

The Sierra 4x4 has the 2.9 EFi engine, either 12 valve or the Cosworth lump. The Cosworth is easy to identify, because it says COSWORTH in large letters on the plenum!

The cosworth is Bob. 24v. They did two different versions of that. The Essex has a totally different timing case to the clogone v6. 2.8 and 2.9. 2.8 were used in mk2 granarda. Capri. Sierra. The 2.9 was the later granarda and Sierra. Think I got that right??

The Essex has the Dizzy at the front and a prominent timing cover. The cologne has the dizzy at the back and the water pump at the front is kinda like a flattened S with the thermostat at the bottom right looking front on.
The 2.8 had the siamesed exhaust ports and the 2.9 the 3 ports. also the timing was completely different with a chain on the 2.9 and gears on the 2.8 making a head swap a non starter. The Cosworth BOA and BOB were the same cologne block but were as much like the original engine as the Pinto and the YB engine

Early Essex engines had oval inlet ports that was changed to D shape when the engine was updated. Early 3ltr had a 40DFAV, later 38DGAS as Norm says. Early engine dipstick on timing chest, later on block plus the oil pump and pan different, very hard to get early type pump. Have a '68 2.5 Zephyr 6 on the drive that was a pain to rebuild, thankfully it had a good oil pump.

we used to use the 40 dfav on the group one escort 2 ltr pintos to give more bottom end cause both chokes opened together.

Yeah that was a problem on cars that needed a rear most sump pan 'well'.
When I fitted my escort mk1 with a V6 had a similar prob coz the dip stick in the timing case wouldnt 'see' the oil.
I am sure I still have some essex bits lying around, the engine ended up in my mk111 then the IV cortina estate.

The only problem with the essex was the weight, cast block, cast heads, cast manifolds cast gearbox and a flywheel big enough to keep a watermill running probably 240kg's !!
without some of its other bits.
Thats why the rover V8 was a better choice for trannies probably 80kg lighter if not 100kg, with its ally box etc

had same bother wondering why i had to keep advancing the timing and head gaskets (scimitar) mickey mouse rockers rattly tappetsapart from the fibre timing gearoh and head gaskets and broken con rods when pushed a bit hard with 180 - 200hp and 7 ton behind

the one i had to keep advancing had the early full fibre gear i got a tuned swaymar lump with steel gears eventualy make good boat anchors nice n heavy

Remember doing headgaskets many a time. When you used to back off, say, to go round a fastish corner and then put your foot down, the engine would hestite, pop, and then go, it was headgasket time!
Also had the mechanical fan, shaft, bearings, etc rip out of the front cover and go through the rad!

Not sure. But I remember a company using the same style heads on the Essex. I might be wrong or getting confused with another engine.

The Cologne used to suffer from the hex drive rounding off as well - or did you mean the Cologne?
