The break is consistent with correct use I would say.
The ratchet pin is only on one face...so what you get is the vertical load held on one side...which produces a bending force at that point. Like a pivot...the lower part counters that force....well unless it breaks!
That's why I prefer the tube design...the pin goes straight thro so it's held more symmetrically.

Hard to guesstimate...could be 50kg to 100kg maybe of sideways force?
