ford 9" axles

i know a few guys on here dabble in things american, anyone got a ford 9" lying about? our boss is after one for our landrover

Worth trying to get a complete axle if you can. 9 inches are really a family of axles with different wheel bearing arrangements, different spline counts on halfshafts etc. I have found that these pages are a mine of useful info on these axles (or rear ends as they are known on the other side of the Atlantic) http://www.kevinstang.com/Ninecase.htm

Sorry it was a completely axle I meant, was half asleep when writing it. Ideally we need something with a 3.5 ratio that’ll handle reasonably big power. There’s a scimitar axle going under for now to get it going

Scimitar axle is Salisbury 4HA which pretty much equals a Dana 44 in spec and is a strong axle. What is your boss doing with the Landy/what engine is he putting in it that would require a 9" Ford unit? -they're big burners of power as a lot of their strength comes from the big hypoid offset of the pinion. I would consider a Dana 60 if the 4HA/Dana 44 setup really isn't up to the job

Jensen CV8/Interceptor also has the 4HA axle, nothing as low as 3.5:1 though.

It’s getting an 18L meteorite v8 in it, making 500hp as it stands but the goal is to have it around 1200hp once the injection system is worked out, hence the need for a good solid axle.

I knew about the scimitar being a Dana 44 in a skirt, it should take the motor as is but isn’t going to handle it with any sort of tuning

Quite a few do, I think Charlie Broomfields sd1 runs one as do a few of the specials. We will be running a step up box driving a gm400 autobox.

10x16" steels with beadlocks and huge hooser drag slicks,

Is the V8 freer revving? The Antar was renowned for being able to crawl on tick-over if what I have been told is true.

I’ll be honest I’m not sure what they will rev to. They are an absolute torque monster though

Just thinking outside the box what about a axle out of a 7.5tonner? Often Dana axles and can take the torque.

We have considered that, it’s getting the width. If we have to start chopping tubes we will but at the moment we are trying to get away with as little as possible

Ashcroft Transmissions who are the go to people for Landrover gearboxes and axle diff upgrades used build an axle that is direct fit to a Landrover but had a 9" Ford diff, apparently they are almost unbreakable even in heavy offroad use. Just checked their site and it doesn't look like they do it now. May be worth a phone call

if you are going for that kind of power and torque don't start with a bog axle. get a custom axle build . jeff houser , andy robinson or john sleath are the guys to do a big power diesel axle. the th400 won't do high torque either use a gm4l80e. it comes in the big yank chevy diesel pickups and some supercharged jags. a 400 will pop very quickly with a lot of tq. john sleath is really the man for derv as he has built a mega fast s10 chevy pickup with well over 1500bhp, and tunes a lot of derv for endurance racers and drag cars. last time i spoke to him he muttered about going over 2000bhp.
