Thanks for all the tips. I have been using the squirting bottle but just wanted to try flood cooling for a change as my machines do have pumps. Perhaps it’s just that I was using old oil. The machine are in the unheated garage so definitely cold and damp.

I was worried about ending up with rust but gave this a try. Due to a really damp barn I have to cover everything in a spray of duck oil every time I finish with the machines - workpieces, chucks, drills, centres and of course the bed, as otherwise it will rust within a couple of days.
I have found that this soluble oil can be left on the machine bed without any rust. Granted it's probably rare that the machine goes more than two or three weeks without use now which isn't months, but it's always exactly as I left it - preventing rust, not causing it.
If it's practical (i.e near to each other) I would have your lathe and mill sharing the same coolant system, like doubleboost does.

Was reading about mist coolant the other day. Probably my best option.
Rather than using a compressor which is overkill and noisy was debating something like this. Modified to suit. Use an old mag dti base and clamp to mill or lathe as needed.
Anyone tried it.

In industry coolant mists can cause serious problems, the Americans love mist coolants, but its something i try to avoid.
I do have a small (cheap Chinese)misting unit but only use it aimed inside a bore when boring as this reduces the air born mist considerably.

A good point. I did wonder about that side of it. Some videos Ive seen show a fog or mist of coolant where others show small drops that are too big to become airborne.
Guessing setup plays a big part in this too.
