Fixing damaged threads

Had a bit of a brain fart last night in my attempts to remove a driveshaft from the hub on a Ford Mondeo.
I hit the end of the driveshaft with a lump hammer (no nut on it, no timber in between either). End result is that now the nut wont enter on to the correct threads.

Any tips on how to salvage the threads?

If you have just damaged the end of the drive shaft (starting threads) get a metal file and put a chamfer on the end of the driveshaft so you can file away the damaged part of the thread thereby revealing new clean undamaged thread, you could use a grinder but you were daft enough to not leave a nut on the end I can't trust you with a power tool LOL

Buy a new nut, cut a couple of slots in the thread of the old nut then use it as a die nut. Fit the new nut.

A thread file of the correct TPI is your best bet.

Going to get my uncles thread restorer and try it tonight

Would that not depend on whether i could get the old nut on the correct threads though. Seems unlikely at this point in time.

My other brainwave was to cut a nut in half, put it on the shaft where the good threads are and work back towards myself which would hopefully clean up the threads as it comes off. Would this work?

Ditto - thread files have got me out of many a hole! The best way forward in my opinion.

Son I fix other people's screw ups day in and day out on hgv's and plant, just chamfer the end of the thread so it cleans up the damaged portion of the thread and that's it, if you only marked the end of the shaft then it's no big deal, now stop fannying about and get on with it

You make it sound easy!
Perhaps im being too conservative in the amount of metal im removing.
If i give a good chamfer to the edge of it should it go on with no fuss?

remeber the shaft usually sits out along way from the nut so the first few threads usually dont matter

i was going to say the "cut the nut on half, put it lower that the damage, put the correct sized ring spanner over the halves and unwind" normally kills the nut as its softer than the driveshaft but cleans it up enough

That didnt work unfortunately. I tried that before i started to chamfer the threads.
Il just have to man up and get a bit more brutal with the file.

shell out and buy a proper thread file trying to recut and bodge deformed threads without one is pot luck, been there done it and got the teeshirt THEN BOUGHT THE PROPER FILE

Running a suitably edged file or even hacksaw blade around the thread sometimes can get you out of trouble, not ideal though.
But it sounds like this one just wants chamfering 2-3mm around the end of the shaft to remove the first thread or two....

If you get a chance though, buy a proper metric thread file, budget one will only set you back £10 or so.

Yes....... No need to shell out more money for a file you don't need, just remove the damaged thread with a chamfer, there will be plenty of thread still protruding from that nut once it's all been re installed, it's not a bodge, improvise, adapt, overcome......get the job done

got it,put the cv joint back in the hub, get a hacksaw, start to car up with it in gear (wear a long kipper tie....only joking) and then run a hack saw along the threads, easier if the threads run away from the car, lol how about that for health and safety

Weird! Someone from this Forum sold me a set of thread files and some thread chasers etc, when i first joined this place. I used the thread file approx 30 minutes ago for the very first time.

Coincidence ? I dont think so (Cue Twilight Zone theme, or for youger heads X-Files theme)

If the threads go the wrong way choose a different gear lol you do need the tie just in case the HSE should spring a surprise visit
