Hi All,
I'm looking for some opinions on fitting a 32a socket in my garage. It'll run fine on a 13a plug (recommended 25a according to specs), but would like a dedicated socket so I can push past 150A on the machine if I want/need to.
I'm not the most knowledgeable when it comes to electrics (though I know the basics), but the quote I got today seems pricey. £280 (inc VAT) to fit a new consumer unit, run the cable (6mm apparently) and install a socket in the garage.
Not quite sure why I need a separate CU as the one I have has spaces in it for spare MCB. Is that normal? Wasn't really convinced by his reasoning behind needing a new CU, but I'm no expert. He said it was because some CU can't take the sudden draw from a welder, so trip out.
Running the cable is all of about 15 minutes work (if that) and once you're into the garage I would have thought it's pretty straight forward. I'm going to lift any paving slabs/block paving and level them off once they're gone, so this seems expensive to me.
Any opinions? Gonna get a couple more quotes anyway, but would really appreciate some advice.
