First Peeler in 18 Years!

I bought some SIP 1.6mm E6013 electrodes for £3, for a pack of 10. This was purely to experiment with, so I wasn't expecting much of it.

My third bead and using 40 Amps, I got a peeler. First time in about 18 years!

I've had that happen a couple of times, very satisfying. Trouble is I never know what I've done to make it happen, so I can't repeat it.

Get some stainless rods and it will happen every time. Make sure your wearing eye protection as they can ping off quite fast.

Different flux I think?

Self peeling slag or not, the weld looks like it has cold unfused sides in places (maybe not even enough travel, kind of jumping
some times)

The beads shown below that one, are much better looking.

It was on a 5mm plate. The other beads are either 3.2mm E6013 or 2.5mm E7018.

either way, the other welds are looking good, well fused, even ripples, etc.

Even so, Erie is occasionally right...
1.6mm rods do have their uses even on 5mm plate, they are great for tacking for example, or joining thick to thin, but you need to increase the amps, 60-70A when the plate is so thick, which is about the limit for the rod.

I haven't stick welded since that bead I don't think...was when I made my toe jack I'm pretty sure, practice bead to warm up a bit and then I decided to go with gasless mig for some reason...going to try and get some welding done next weekend when I'm finally off for 2 days although I've got a feeling it's going to end up being ally that needs welding

Ally is easier, you just melt it all into a blob then file it back to the right shape afterwards

Ah, I see, maybe all hope is not lost after all then..

If your welder is slightly maxed out on thick steel and you think the welds are a bit cold then heating the metal with a blow torch can sometimes get you over the line...just sayin

It was just a piece of scrap steel, so wasn't too bothered about fusion.

I can easily run 120 Amps, so the welder wasn't maxed out.

no, but the rod would have been.

a preheat can help with penetration in both situations although you will probabyl struggle with a 1.6mm rod on 5mm steel as the heatsink effect will suck all the heat from the weld. even a maxxed out 1.6 wont do a great deal on 5mm. its more 2.5 territory

Kram is definitely right about welding with stainless rods.
Don’t lower your mask to see why it hasn’t peeled off as expected too soon or you could end up with a ping of hot slag burnt into your eye…… No need to ask me how I know but I thank goodness for the expertise of an eye consultant at the John Radcliffe hospital in Oxford.
