Two Fire extinguishers saved from a fire.
Top one vented and released the CO2 and melted.

The cheep copy unit did not and blew the top off.
It was found flat and stuck to a brick wall.

We had a lucky escape a few years ago. Arson attack on the pallet place next door. Cladding peeled back and a gallon of petrol poured in. It was 2am. We are right by a dual carriage way althoughthere is a high wall. Fire burnt for almost 1hr before anyone noticed
Luckily the mains alkythene water pipe ran across the top of the building above the fire. It kept the fire down enough to stop it spreading.
Pallets are surprisingly hard to burn
It was winter so the were soaking anyway.
Transit tipper inside a right off bit forklift ok.
Too close for comfort!

No one’s mentioned it but I always have an airline to hand when doing any sort of welding on vehicles, machinery or plant.

No one ever mentions it ,,, but I will

Kick the earth lead off and use the mig torch ,, the argon will put out fires too ,,,
not one to rely on , but its handy to remember .

Most computer suite systems had both in roof and also under floor. But suspended floor tiles are fairly heavy. You will also have had a VESDA system for early smoke detection.

Or you can have a mix of smoke and CO1 detectors under the floor.
Vesda and air sniffers have a few, but major ,imitations in computer rooms.

The way the protection of computer rooms is going back to have a gas system for each cabinet.
With the new range of AFD.

Vesda are now lagging in fire detection.

One place I worked was a German owned company and our server room was monitored by head office, the IT guy got a phonecall to say the heat detectors had alarmed, but as he was at the pub with my boss I got the phonecall to go and have a look as I was bottom of the food chain and the only other person with card access to the server room.

Im a bit out of touch with the modern detection used in industry these days. But like anything its always advancing, sometimes rapidly. Though offshore we did have aspirated detection under the control room floor and in some of the specialist electronic control kit rooms. Backed up with the usual selection of point detectors.

One place I worked at was (IMO) a disaster waiting to happen. When I started there, I told friends basically that.

Burned down one morning. Previous day, one person was on camera while carrying out a smouldering waste bin on arrival at work. Next night it went up. I could see it from soon after setting out to go to work, about 4 miles away. We set up in other buildings on the site, but I left about a couple of months later.

18 months later (or less) it went up again. I was not really surprised. The industrial estate owner would not have had the company back on site - but it went under anyway.

That's why all rubbish & waste bins should be of thickish steel sheet with a well fitting lid .

I had to go in a burnt out garage to put in new phones & computer lines , it was evil with thick damp soot everywhere ... the culprit .. fire officer , reckoned spontaneous combustion from oily rags left in an unlidded bin one hot sunny day & the fire broke out at night several hours after the workshop closed for the weekend .
