Came home from work yesterday evening, turns out wife had a minor electrical fire, thé magic smoke had escaped from her Iron lead, it only get used anually.View attachment 348941

I'll stick wifies iron next to it, it too is ornamental now.

I proposed to change the cable, she said 'don't bother'.

She's not really big on ironing, neither am I.

Workshop rules are:

No welding/cutting/heating in the last hour of business hours (plus any rusty car that has been welded should go outside the minute it is finished).

Sensible rules!

Only one egg cup of petrol /flammable substance in the well ventilated garage /workshop and no more for four hours afterwards .

How does that work, I mean your not exactly eating the stuff.

Seems ABC powder is a mix of ammonium phosphate and ammonium sulphate. Odd choice given high temperatures will decompose both and could cause some interesting reactions with the wrong chemicals..

Dry powder can hurt you in other ways:
A yacht I used to crew on (Nic 36) was put ashore as the prop shaft coupling was not gripping the shaft.
Access is very tight, but a local boatyard engineer mamaged to carefully worm his way in there past the various sharp and awkward sticking-out bits in the engine space, he was wedged in, but had room to get spanners on the knackered coupling.
As he worked, he must have disturbed the built-in automatic dry powder extinguisher in the engine room, and it let go right above his face.
He was immediately choked, blinded and deafened, and remaining in situ would have meant suffocation.
He exited the only way, the way he came in, but a lot faster!..and he suffered numerous nasty cuts and bruises in his hasty exit.
When he got his scraped and bleeding carcass on deck a few seconds later, the dry powder was still roaring out and it totally covered everything inside the boat, cleaning up must have been a mare, it really gets everywhere.
I hate the stuff.

When we used to work in electricity sub stations the first thing we did on entry was to lock the automatic fire suppression system into manual "safe" mode.

We had a similar system in our server room. That used Halon.

I think that the system was made by Castell.

went to put some wiring right in a pub a few meter tails melted. the db s switches and everything covered in powder the useless sods sprayed it all with powder had to renew the whole lot

I mentioned on another post about the moron on a ship I was working on, who used a dry powder extinguisher for boundary cooling while some welding was being done on an internal bulkhead.......

That brought back bad memories for me, I got stuck in behind the engine on a sigma 33, I can do small spaces but dont like it.

Substations are normally CO2 suppression systems, so locking off is part of the standards follwed for-their installation. Only marine systems are different for engine rooms as they require multiple manual actions to fire.

Castell is the common interlock system, but there are others. In days gone be before the montreal protocl regarding cfc etc with automated halon 1301 systems you didnt need lock offs as you could breath freely in the space as it was only 5% by volume. 1211 or BCF is different that kills you sharpish. The newer halon replacements are pants as you cant breathe them, might as well use co2.

We were told that the Halon was released so rapidly that there was a distinct likelihood of you being knocked off your feet and also hit but flying floor tiles. Breathing was the least of the issues.
