Yes I've always done the 'check back half an hour later' for all welding, grinding and especially casting and in this case nothing was apparent. But it must have been smouldering undetected as it went up a good four hours later. The foundry is very well ventilated, the 'big six' fibre cement cladding having hundreds of openings where they meet the dwarf walls so the air gets changed pretty quickly (by intent) but probably disperses the smell as well.

The problem is, what sort of fire/smoke detection can you fit in a foundry which inherently produces smoke and heat?, maybe one one for @The_Yellow_Ardvark

Totally this, when I was doing alot of oxy propane cutting 15 years ago, someone said, check every hour for four to six hours, flying blobs of molten metal can smoulder for hours, before starting a fire.
And record everything in the hot work book! We all thought that no-one would ever look at it but during an inspection an Insurance man asked to see the record for a particular welding job on the factory floor.
Fortunately there was a corresponding entry in the book - some of the fitters were lazy gits & rarely bothered to fill the book in! After that inspection our chief engineer laid down the law, anyone caught not filling in the book would be liable for dismissal!

All though there are limits, we were setting up to weld a bracket inside one of the robot welding cells (which are designed for welding in) when our "jobsworth" H&S chap came over and said we would need a hot work permit from him, we just waited until he went home so he wouldn't be available to issue the permit then did the job.

Id suggest or question whether the robot needs a daily hot works permit
if its producing heat / naked flame I guess it would ora mention in the risk assessment at least ,, but it wont need a cup of tea at the end of the day ..

Burning paint off an old clinker built sailing dinghy a few years ago, at the back end there were gaps between the planks, Shut the torch off & stood back, little wisp of smoke coming out of a gap. I always keep a squeezy bottle of water handy when doing this, gave it a squirt, five minutes later it started up again. More water fixed it.
Two years ago a mate in Ireland was just approaching launch date on a wooden sailing boat he had built, she was an absolute jewel, all epoxy cedar strip hull with mahagany trim & fit out, handmade wooden spars, bronze fittings & new sails. A week before launch day the workshop burnt to the ground with her in it.
It was believed to have started with a battery drill battery left on charge & cooked off.

Good idea, I'm sure he'd soon get fed up of coming down to the factory floor at the start of every shift to issue 15 hot work permits.
A good example of his mentality was the loading deck is a "hi-vis must be worn" area which didn't bother us as we wore them all the time, we were crossing the deck one day in a shut down and saw him without a hi-vis so challenged him "oh it doesn't count during shut downs"

Lint in dryers is the single biggest causes of fires onboard ships. We had a ship from a sister company burn up and sink a decade or so ago, the fire started in the laundry. It sank because so much water was pumped aboard that the bow dipped under water and it then flooded the whole boat. It was taken under tow as it was pulling miles of seismic cables and if it stopped it would turn the area into a maze of floating marine hazards.
Good friend of mine was in a life boat taking pics, I have the whole set from start to finish somewhere.

I love mine. Mostly used for cutting up thick pallet bearers but brilliant on steel and aluminium. When I set it up just right I can cut to within a tenth of a thou. Incredible accuracy.

Not advised in a foundery.
I think any smoke, heat, or ionisation detector would be something that had to be deactivated while I was using the induction furnace or gas forge and switched on at the end of a session. After all the objective is to make hot smokey things !
