Fire guards

Not a spark guard but a fence in front of a wood burner to stop kids getting melted. I prefer Darwinism but hey ho!

Anyway. Does anyone know of any regs for these please? I’m thinking along the part K lines for handrails etc. - minimum gaps for heads, footholds, whatever.

I’m assuming something exists but possibly not as it’s not a spark guard.

Anyone have experience of designing these please?

they used to be very common in the 60s maybe 50s , they look like a dog crate with a side missing , browny gold color

That’s them. He wants something a bit less dog crate and more bespoke / fancy / in keeping. You know, words that cost more

To be fair to him I wouldn’t want that in my lounge either!

He / we are thinking more along the lines of a fence with a small gate where the door is. Possibly with decorative panels in. Maybe.

Which is why I’m wondering if there’s regs for this sort of thing.

that above was my goto safety fireguard simple and keeps fingers away whilst lets loads of heat through

there isnt any

Couldnt find anything. I know there’s a gap to do with heads in stair gates / fences etc but nothing mentioned about these things.

I’ll see what I can find but may just do what you do and align them with other similar regs so I can demonstrate I’ve at least tried.

One I did for a friend

The gate had a clever sprung loaded locking pin so you had to lift with both hands to open it. No chance a toddler would open it, I tried with mine before delivery!

Turns out there is a reg:

“EN1930:2011. Published by the European Committee of Standardisation (CEN), it specifies the safety requirements and testing methods for child safety barriers for indoor use, which are designed to be fitted across openings to limit access, and to prevent children up to the age of 24 months from passing through”

Seeing how easily my three have destroyed baby gates, id say a well mounted steel fire guard with bar spacing to match would be more than ample
