Scrap steel and aluminium are very cheap - so it annoys me when you buy scrap they charge you full price - even though their scrap contacts pay them far less. I don't mind paying a bit over the odds but full price for something destined for the skip is taking the proverbial.
I wanted some nice cast iron but the prices are silly everywhere. So it got me thinking what other sources are there for things.
For example brake discs are cast iron - and new they seem to sell for less than the metal dealers want for the raw product.
So any tips on what can be picked up as scrap for use as base stock?
Thinking mainly for lathe and milling use but the same applies to welding of course.
