The danger with trying all and any product is you end up with a patch which looks different to the 'unscrawled upon' area of the hearth.

You need to find a compatible solvent base for felt tip so test the same pen on a smooth surface, let it dry, and test different solvents. I would have thought children's felt tip pens are water based. If it was a permanent marker then try IPA, xylene or paint stripper (you say you've tried acetone, I assume that was actually acetone and not nail varnish remover).

Methylene chloride aka professional Paint stripper. Use it at work to dissolve the bitumen in asphalt samples. Just make sure it is liquid and not the gel stuff. Don't breath it in and apply liberally. Not found anything that it won't take off. Flashes of very quickly too so won't damage the stone. Bit tricky to get hold of but well worth having a tin of.

I had already tried washing detergent with a tooth bush to no avail along with bar keepers friend (which is just another fine abrasive). When I tried acetone, it was 99.9% acetone, not nail varnish remover.
I forgot I have some Karcher Stone driveway cleaner in the garage. Going to give that a go tonight.
If anything that removes the felt tip does stain the stone, I'll just look into staining the whole hearth. The area isn't massive. It is porous stone, which is why the felt tip is so hard to shift.

Cellulose thinner would be my choice, it moves most stuff

That's the very stuff we use here, only we buy it in 200l drums
didn't think about buying lab grade stuff. The paint stripper version is restricted to "industrial use" tried to buy some and they wanted proof of "eligibility to purchase"

I wonder what might happen if you tried burning it out with a blowtorch? It should at least burn whatever pigment has become embedded in the surface, that might turn it black but more likely a pale grey. Maybe test it on some other stone first!
Seems like common household bleach has got most of it off however the accumulation of the concoctions used has coloured it slightly. It still looks “wet”
This is better though as I can hopefully just recreate the things used and just go over the whole hearth

We had some cans of graffiti removal spray from a mate at the local council it worked ok but i found it was better if you soaked it on and placed a absorbent pad on top and left for a long time.

M.E.K Methyl Ethyl Ketone, used to use it for stripping aircraft etch primer, just make sure you have all the windows open, there isn't much it wont shift,works a treat
