Felt tip pen removal from stone

Has anyone got any ideas on how to remove felt tip pen from stone?

I have my girlfriends family over and the boy has scribbled over our stone hearth with felt tip pen and most household products have failed to remove it. So far, we’ve tried; acetone, baking soda with vinegar, bar keepers friend and a magic eraser and none have managed to remove it.

Any other ideas?

That did cross my mind! I’ll call that plan F. Not entirely sure on the stone. It’s a thin paving slab that we’ve used, nothing too exotic like slate or marble.

The methods we’ve tried were the most common ones. I’m tempted to try white spirit but doesn’t it leave an oily residue?

Might be worth looking at graffiti removal products.

Vodka maybe test them all somewhere unobtrusive first. Just in case.

your stone hearth will be dry and it will soak up any marker pen into it

If its a water based ink a one of those household steam cleaners will likely do it, I had the same problem when my kids were young, it took a few attempts to get rid of it though.

Thinners probably your best bet.
...just don't do it with the fire going,or you will land up in the land of your ancestors..

Op said in his first post he had tried acetone. I wrote on the side of a machine with a permanent marker about 8 years ago. Only just starting to disappear after liberal applications of all sorts of things,including wd40.

Might be worth trying truckwash...

You could try hydrogen peroxide. No experience of it in this scenario, I read about it in my wife’s Take a break mag

It might sound weird but a trick I use to remove permanent marker from phones, sockets and patch panels is to go over it with a whiteboard marker (magic marker/non permanent) which dissolves the permanent marker then wipe it off with a tissue.

I don’t have a steam cleaner but I’ll try a steam iron with a cloth underneath.

Never thought of graffiti remover, just looked on screwfix and minimal quantity is 5L for £50. I might try get a small can off the internet.


I have seen the non permanent marker pen over permanent marker on whiteboards before. As it’s has been absorbed into the stone though, I’m not sure it will work.

Hydrogen peroxide will be the next port of call I think.

Have you tried IPA? That shifts most inks I believe.

Just kicking around an idea:
The UV in sunlight fades most things, would a strong UV light like an old suntan lamp or similar have the desired effect?

Paint brush cleaner with a nail brush?

Caustic soda?

Spirit of salts?

Not due down towards your way until that weird “zombie/what day of the week is it” period between Christmas and New Years. Thanks for the offer. I’ll see how I get on between now and then.

Will try the other suggestions. White spirit, steam and if I can get my hand on some Hydrogen peroxide (blonde hair dye?) I’ll give that a go too.

WD40 would have been my first choice but if acetone hasn't worked I doubt it will - definitely worth a try though.

I would also suggest Hydrogen Peroxide but before you do just try strong bleach.

If it was outside stone a pressure washer would do it.
