poor farmer a far cry from a grey fergie with 2 furrow plow and a bale elevator for stacking. ive built a fair few stacks by hand . probably why my backs knacked now

I heard someone say that when the JCB Fastrac first arrived on the scene farmers had trailers falling apart behind them on the road as they weren't designed for the higher speed the tractor could do; any truth in that - or urban myth..?

You may be able to get a tractor to move but I dont think you would get far in a modern combine. I got in one to move it and had to admit defeat, more buttons and knobs than the Starship enterprise so I got out

Why would you run a harrow on both the front and back? I don't know anything about farming, but like to watch a few farmers on YouTube, and find you get more out of things if you know what you're looking at :-)

Dear things for what they are, bide your time, I feel there may be some bargins about in the hobby / toy sector fairly soon. This guy seems to lay his hand on a fair bit of older tractors, usually advertised on his faceache page.

I just work on the farm, there's 20 of us on the farm.

both true and untrue. It's a bit of a minefield so I'll do my best to explain, but I'm not an expert here.

Years ago, trailers were designed to do the same speed as a tractor - 30kph. You're talking maybe 5 ton trailers.
Then tractors started going 40kph. Virtually double the kinetic energy with the speed increase, AND trailers started to be built bigger and bigger, 10 ton becoming popular. But agricultural axles and wheels were generally ok at this speed. It was brakes that suffered, masseys especially - they had an entire generation of 40kph tractors with heavier and heavier kit on the back, and pathetic brake spec, with no end of problems - since no-one bothered to maintain their trailer brakes, if they even had them.
Agricultural axles were not meant to be pulled over 40kph, though, and I wouldn't be surprised if some older trailers in poor condition were shaken to bits, wheel bearing failures etc, at high speed behind a fastrac.

Slowly everyone started to catch up, most 6-10ton trailers have good working order hydraulic brakes. But around the same time 50k tractors hit the market, trailer designers started specifying commercial trailer axles with super single tyres, with heavier weights - now a lot of trailers are rated to 16 ton and higher, as well as being rated for higher speed, and have air brakes.

But with fastracs and the newer 50k and 60k tractors on the market, legally they aren't allowed to run trailers at this speed on the road without failsafe brakes (air) and suspension. I think ABS might come into it at some speed as well? As I say, I'm no expert.

That's pretty much true, back then almost all tractors did 30km/h and trailers designed to suit, along came the fastrac that could do 80 km/h and trailers couldn't cope. Things have fairly caught up, our newest trailers are all air braked with load sensing and abs is starting to come in now as well.

We need something on the front to cope with the weight on the back, running a big weight block when drilling would just create compaction and deep wheel marks which we try to avoid with the dual wheels, so generally run some form of cultivator to ease to work on the rear one, we stuck the powerharrow on the front a few years ago as on the heavier ground we struggled to get a good enough seed bed with just the one powered Harrow.

The thing is though, beautiful clear days like this are not the norm, not in my experience. It is usually tanking it down or as one picture showed, knee deep in snow. This stops your Crofter in his tracks. The farm is well laid out and we all know from experience it is hard work the real issue is though that no matter how well you plan anything, the weather often works against you.
Having said all of that, those halcyon days make it all worthwhile. Sometimes.
