Stupid I am not, you look again at the busted exhaust.No it hasn’t, are you looking at the intake ports?

My eyesight isn't what it was but there looks like an insert on the exhaust port with the broken valve so I have to agree with the above . I don't know what caused the dropped valve but it may have been an overheating cylinder ?( common on VW aircooled engines on no 3 cylinder which runs hotter than the other cylinders) often due to tight valve clearances, Incorrect ignition timing and mixture also have an effect on cylinder temperatures as could a restricted exhaust

Well there was a reason i made this engine talk a separate thread a si din t want it clogging up my build thread and it would get more interest.
but hey ho.
Now i have found a AQ15 B20 head of a working engine.
Is this the same as a AQ130 B20 ?? could be worth getting to save alot of hassle.

yeah i dont mind any thread you make wolly, its been acuple years since i was last here, i wanna get a small boat one day and do it all up, i have a few small motors in my yard here not marine ones but i love working on small motors so i'll work on them for now.

Things are looking good for the dodgy engine.
As we had this head off it i found the first exhaust valve seat past repair but for fitting a new valve seat. And with all the rest of the head a bit naff i decided to get another.
This is alot better and came off a running engine that somebody is breaking, MMmm maybe i should of bought the full engines ha ha.
so from this
to the new to me head
So next il get that stripped and cleaned up and check the valves, infact i have checked one already and it well within the tolerances.
And next mage bonus is the drive plate that is looking not to good.
Well got one from the same chap
These buggers go for around £400 and this one a bargain at £50 happy days.
And why finish there. this was the state of the bores.
I took it to an engine shop as they said they would take a look and see whats what.
And after a short few minutes with a honing tool then a flexible one they look good.
So when i get the bore gauge ill check them out for sure.
I will be repainting the engines and got some stripper to have ago with, what a waste of time this one is.
I just wish i could use my sand blaster but thats not the best way to go is it. and it wont work with soda so ts either get it dipped or wire brush it.
Oh yes on this project for the first time ever i am going to keep a cost sheet. I did for a while on the ;last boat but when it got well into the £000`s i stopped.
Just curious if i will break even on this one as the other i near did, and could of but wanted a quick sale to get this boat. .
The other day T gave me a hand again starting to remove the windows for refurbing. removing. We got one out, and what a faff.
I was glad though as we managed to save near all the inner wooden frame. I think its Teak so i will replace the rotter sections.
I have a steam bender here so if needs must and we find a rotten curved section i can make a replacement.
No wonder there were leaks from the windows, they near fell out.
Better stock up on the Butyl tape

I found some paint stripper last week. It smells just like the old Nitromors that worked well, i.e. contains dichloromethane.

it might be worth taking the block to the engine place and get them to have it in their tank that will remove the paint and give it a new surface for the new paint to stick to, i did the same on my landrover block had it tanks cleaned it came up very nice i got them to prime and paint it and so far it has lasted 9 years unlike a few years for the job i did on the head with the green paint, i used lister green on my engine instead of the duck egg blue. i'll upload a pic of my engine taken in 2012.
the first 2 are before and the others are after the work i stripped and rebuilt it myself the old push rod engines are so easy to do up, the only work i had the engine shop was rebore it tank clean it and fit the new pistons on the conrods and install the new cam bearings but other then that i did the rest

I have been shown this stripper which is, sounds scary though ha ha
I do yes, i am just getting into the window refurb and will ad dit this weekend.
Engines are to one side now while i decide what to do and have them as the winter project maybe, or as and when other jobs stop etc. .

I couldnt wait so i just did it.
This transom shield or plate had to come off. Jut needed to find out what was going in underneath it.
Not top hard a job once the drive collars were removed.
I am tempted to sand blast these to get them smart aswell as the drives then teat them .
th epain was the dam screws, some came out some didnt so just drilled them out enough to get the plate off.
i am a little surprised as the timber seems ok on quick look over. and the laminations on it. ill tap test it later to see.
And it doesnt look to have anew outer skin either.
So thinking ahead here. if when i have tap tested it etc etc and its good i will either see how the collars fit as is and just put them back as they should be or use smaller stainless shields for each drive just a bit larger than the drives and following the profile.

Well just been out and scrapped it a bit and its good, tap tested it and poked the timber and solid. Captain Faffer is a happy chappy again
That spot is Watermouth Harbour Just north of Ilfracombe. We found it about 7 years ago when we went caravaning down there as the site is next to the harbour Watermouth cove caravan site. . cracking spot.

Good and bad news on the boaty front..
Workshop roof has give in so I have had to prioritise that. But then it will be bigger than the plan was. So all is mine now of around 30sqm
Bad bit is that it's put boat building on hold for a short while. And I have got some work on to earn for the boat fund pot. This is done though when I am.not at work and in boat building time. So as said good and bad..

On the boat nothing I am afraid as we been busy still on the workshop.
1/2 way there though.
Got the wall.built and framed out then clad last week. Feels massive now I side after we removed the inner wall and wi.does to make one big workshop Instead of the two.
Just bit more timber for the rest of the roof at the back. Concrete then to level the floors then sort the wiring out.
Got a new toy today aswell. Will be setting up later.
