If you have things from relatives, make sure it's because you want them.
I have also come to the same conclusion. I have managed to get rid of a lot of stuff recently that was purely kept through sentiment. That's one which can be problematic. Sentimentality. Something I've always tolerated, but I'm learning to topside that one too. An item is an item. It has to be classed as such.
Not in my house ...............Sentimentality only lasts one generation.

Cards. We don't do cards at all here. Not for anything. That long? There's nothing I own that I wouldn't sell for the right price. That's my right price, not your idea of my right price.
Anyone on who doesn't know me well enough and gives me a celebrations card probably won't do it again after they see me read the card and then put it in the recycling. I've seen it, why do I need to keep it?

My mum kept them. Had a couple of boxes full from rellies and people I had never heard of. Also a boxful of postcards sent by people on their holidays, including me, wishing you were here etc, and what the weather was like in Torremolinos in 1976. After a scan through for missed birthday banknotes, I put the whole lot in recycling. Along with loads of photos of long dead relatives that I never met.
I wobbled though at the wedding telegrams, and the one saying how my dad was missing in action in 1940. Will MY son even care ?
All that history lost though![]()
I’m the same- seeing my Mums writing is a real tonic from time to time - and the voice mails from missed calls so I can still hear her happy voice occasionally. You can't keep every card you receive but I have kept a few. It's nice to see my late parents and aunts handwriting now and again.
