Value remains when cost is forgotten. There's a fine line between knowing what's useful and what isn't. I have a large number of odd bits and pieces, but only because I know they're irreplaceable. WWII-era radio components and decent single-purpose hand tools. Not often used, but great when needed. By contrast my grandmother kept minutes from church meetings sixty years ago. The volume of paper cleared from their loft that went straight to the tip...
In a general sense where clutter is concerned, especially when relatives are involved; it's not your responsibility to be a museum. If you have things from relatives, make sure it's because you want them. Not because your great aunt really liked a hideous vase. The vase remains hideous, and you are doing her memory no favours by retaining it out of a misplaced sense of duty. If something hasn't been touched in years, unless it has a specific purpose or a clear plan to deal with it, then it can be sold or given away. Mostly, I completely forget what I paid for things and end up enjoying giving them away to friends who need that thing at that time. Pass things on, and do your best to increase joy in the world.

That's one which can be problematic. Sentimentality. Something I've always tolerated, but I'm learning to topside that one too. An item is an item. It has to be classed as such.

I have also come to the same conclusion. I have managed to get rid of a lot of stuff recently that was purely kept through sentiment.
