ER32 Chuck Problem

Well, news from Numpty Corner :ashamed:. I've no problem fitting/removing those collets which have obviously been used before, but the new/unused ones in the lot I bought are proving unwilling to fit easily. [hangs head in shame ]

Perhaps there are burrs on them or bits of swarf? Perhaps a bit of emery cloth will ease things into place.

One other thing, the chuck is advertised as taking a 10mm drawbar and I thought I'd have a go at making one. But, when I tried to screw a length of 10mm threaded rod into the end, it only caught for a few threads and wouldn't go any further without 'excess persuasion'.

What am I missing here? :dontknow:

Mine is M12 as it is an MT3. I bought some 12mm threaded rod from screwfix and it fitted very nicely. Only trouble is just a fraction too short!

Perhaps you need a different piece of m10?

The thread in the collet chuck looks to be fine pitch, I'll need to check the thread on the bar using my gauge. What is the 'normal' tpi on 'ordinary' threaded bar?

EDIT: I'm thinking this might be the stuff I need? [without going out to the shed to measure my present stuff, which was just lying about :ashamed:]

Mine are a selection, I have 7/16 unf, an m12 and an m10. The metrics are all standard threads, not fine.
