Right, eventually just about got around to this. The fly press stand is made and this is the first job. I had a quick check tonight to see if there is enough height on the press to get the broach and pulley in position. It was very quick but I think it may just work but will need a bit of "persuasion"
I was hoping to slide the guide bush up the broach so I can lower the broach into the pulley then back up into the hole in the ram. However looking at the depth of the hole in the ram, the broach will be engaged in the side of the pulley before the bush is all the way home.
So I went back out into the workshop just now to have a closer look and I'm right, doing that, the bush is not engaged in the pulley at all, I can't slide it in as the teeth on the broach are in cut mode, pushing against the side of the pulley. See below.
I'll have a think about it, one approach could be to push the broach down far enough to get it in the press using "other means" needs to be about 50 or 60mm. I do have a log splitter, but that may be overkill
Is it usual to just leave the broach waggling around in the hole in the ram or do I make some kind of holder? At the moment I guess you can push it down, and to return it you either turn the pulley over and push the opposite direction, or push it all the way through and reinsert it in the top, or just push it back up from below if loose enough.
Not having used one before and after nearly screwing the pulley up before I'm being a bit cautious, I've hidden the BFH
Cheers
Andy
