They're still moaning abount the 3 times in the 20th century that they lost to us - Perfidious Albion probably cheated in all of thoseTo be frank I did wonder if the Germans had brought their own ref anyway.
The usa womens team is the highest ranked and when they played fc dallas boys under 15s they got thrashed. The 2 aren't even comparable. There's no reason I can think of why womens football shouldn't be as good as the mens. Except of course in power, stamina and fitness levels but who wants to watch that.
Fact is though at the moment it is nowhere near the level of mens professional football. The womens England side would get thrashed by a third rate third division mens team. I am prepared to believe some of those women could play for a professional league mens team and I find it curious that they don't. Is there a law against women even applying to play for a professional mens team??
I’ve said to quite a few (men) who commented on this, whether positively or negatively, the simple fact stands that the Ladies brought back silverware which the men have failed to do since 1966.There's no reason I can think of why womens football shouldn't be as good as the mens. I can see the need for this. All 3 of my kids went through a local franchise for a few years (mixed) and then the 2 boys graduated to a local club. My daughter was very hesitant though until we found an all girls team - where she’s thriving. I see your point about it must be working but I guess we’re lucky with the talent in that squad. Maybe girl only establishments will encourage even more and increase our talent pool or at least get more folk out running around which must be a good thing !Also on the radio this morning talk of new women only football academies being set up on the back of this. Surely if we have a team that is this good whatever training there is currently in place must be pretty good already??
Well put.Girls who persist with sport into their teens are the exception not the rule. Many girls drop out as it's not seen as cool or ladylike or whatever. Even at primary level I've seen that girls tend to shy away from team games where they play with boys - simply because girls are socialised to hold back and not get stuck in, be aggressive, or be competitive. Boys aren't. Girls often do better in all female environments, whether it's sports or education.
The downside of having girls only academies etc is that they will be fewer and further apart so many kids won't be able to travel to them, whereas the mixed sex club might be more local. Anything that gets more girls into sport would be great though.
I don't think anyone is pretending that the women's game will ever be as fast or as overtly physical as the men's, but for me one of the great things is that the tournament showed that it's OK for girls to be ultra competive, and they don't have to shy away from sports that are aggressively physical.
Perhaps the equality card should be played and require all league teams to have 5 female players or have one goal handicap for each non female player?Well put.
The comment a few posts back about why women don't compete in professional men's teams...... it's because there will always be a better choice of a male player available. No team in their right mind would choose a female player "just because". They want the best available to them as their aim is to win, not get a prize for being inclusive.
I for one think it's fantastic that the ladies game is being taken more seriously, it's about time!
As for their being "very little actual skill on display".... Really?!![]()
I think it's better just to accept that women's sports is it's own thing. It deserves an audience in it's own right, not as a poor relation to the men's game. Professional football has been a male preserve for a very long time and the money involved is astronomical; it's hugely dominant, so it's hard to see women's football reaching that level, but hopefully we'll see more interest, sponsorship etc.
This is a great website about exceptional women in sport:

I think it's fair to say that most sports developed as showcases for what male bodies could do - so they favour strength and speed - and are not about what female bodies are good at, like flexibility, coordination, and endurance. So it's a bit pointless comparing male and female sports. The women's game isn't lesser, it's just different.
(And this is exactly why we need to preserve the sex categories in sport, rather than letting males who identify as women into the female sex class. Good to see the RFU, Cycling, Triathlon etc finally getting their act together on this...... whilst Fifa look to be allowing self id).
