There's fingerprints in it, so its some sort of epoxy repair compound.

Just above the green oil filter there is a hex?unit with 2 pipes ,is there a lever at the bottom? if so thats the fuel pump and primer,probably the diaphragm inside is the one that needs replacing .....our sprinkler system back up pump,is a diesel it filled the crankcase with fuel,luckily no damage

I noticed that it has the latest modification of the four turn twisted stop cable 
There are a few of these about as boat tuggers down where I spend all summer and needless to say I get a few " can you just's "
Ref. it jumping out of gear, try to get it sorted before attempting any hills, the brakes aren't that brilliant, if it pops out on a decent it mainly results in the washing machine being needed when back home

It covers all you will need to know to do running repairs on the pump, covering replacing the govenor diaphragm and timing the pump, which looks like it will need to be removed to do a permanent repair to the block.

TBH, now its in the garage i won't be running it again until ive fixed it all up.
The stop cable is a 'vintage repair' according to the old boy i got it off. There must be 40 miles of bailer twine wrapped round the axles and holding stuff together
The brakes are particularly scary, i need to press down with all my weight to stop the thing, plus the handbrake doesnt stay up.
Washing machine indeed. Oddly enough they stop it quite well when in reverse. I nearly threw myself off the thing braking when going backwards
