Emergency stop button with a VFD ?

I have been at it again trying to find the way to go with wiring an emergency stop button with the VFD for my lathe. Looked on the internet as usual but there isnt an easy answer to go by for me. I see folk mention relays and stuff.

What i am wanting is for once the E stop is pressed and when i turn the knob to reset it is for the lathe not to come on untill i turn it on again on the VFD.

Will the VFD just shut down when the E stop is pressed ?

Most VFD's require a run command to re-start after invoking estop. There should be a setting in the parameters to define it.

Assuming you can get a N.O. switch can't it just be wired as a stop switch? You would need to press the start switch to get it going again.

As Pete says, and you should be able to configure an enable signal in the VFD, when the e stop brakes the enable signal this will stop the drive.

What drive do you have? The manual should give some description of how it should operate, you can have 2 or 3 wire control, some drives can be programmed to use either - these mean that you either need a push button or a maintained switch to get the drive to run.

Estop switches are usually NC (normally closed) so in the event of a wire falling out or being chopped in half they fail safe.

That is what i am wondering, once Estop is pressed then for the lathe motor to work the VFD will need to have the start pressed again.

thats what i was asking in my odd words i guess lol. just as a switch but with reading i need to ensure the motor does not kick in again once the Estop is reset.

Those switches are not usually rated for much current, so if you put it in series with the drive power then you may damage it.

It may be ok, there’s no spec on the listing - but the usual way would be to use that switch to control a contactor or relay of you want to cut the power.

I have the same one. I asked a couple months back which caused a big debate. I wired it with the built in E stop function. It doesn’t ramp decelerate (i think it’s called) when operated. It’ll just coast to a stop.

The on and off switch will need to be reset once the E stop is pressed. It will not just restart.

So to get the E stop working you’ll need to program the Pins beginning with x to be the comm line for the E stop. It’s really simple and explains it in the instructions mx

Yes it can ramp decelerate. Just off to have a shower. After I will edit a pic of the manual and show you the things that you need to change. All very easy and as I was advised. Best to play With it On a bench first (carefully) then refit it all.

i would of just fitted the Estop inline in the comms before the VFD to shut all down

My E stop on my 3 phase lathe, is triggered by the off button on control panel.

If I hit it. I then have to rearm it, then press go again.

Even I managed many years ago.

I think you just need to have the switch as an input (eg from com to x5). If you configure the input as an e stop then you should be good to go. It’s not a drive I’m familiar with but Kim will confirm or deny that!
