I got the same message from BT but only on the 1st page of my BT access point after log on, so I know my request was genuine as I was already within a secure area.
I use a gmail address as a "throwaway" account.
+1 for gmail. Gmail also supports "sub-addressing" (discussed here) so that you can use "+extensions" on your email address, creating throwaway addresses for different sites that can easily be blocked if they start spamming you.
If you're a fan of desktop email, using Outlook Express, Outlook or Windows Mail (or their equivalents on Mac/Linux) then you can still connect to a gmail account using these tools. Same thing for your phone email client.
