I Have had a look on line and Edwards electrical have them in stock, arrange the fuse holders so that the 45amp one is closest to the main switch,
I am a retired electrician and have two wylex rewirable boards at home i have a 45amp feed to the workshop that has been there over twenty years and never had a problem, with regards to the nic eic why would you let them inspect the installation in the first place,

may bee u are and have done so in the past thats up to u but its a fail on an nic eic periodic report inspection test putting a 45 amp breaker in a 30 amp holder . nothing personal but u are out of touch with the regs and thats the last im going to comment on the matter as u know best ,http://electrical.theiet.org/books/amendment-no3/index.cfm

I am more concerned with my cable it should be safe but is it ok ? breakers popping is an annoyance but melted cable no way

I am no way saying this is right but my mate ran his workshop off a 3x 4mm swa 100M U.G. from the house and has various big bits of kit including millers and lathes mig and tig and a large digital converter 1ph -3ph 415
and although the lights would brown out at startup of the lathe it was working for 30yrs, till he got his BIG 3ph compressor and it would not start every time, it would start ok if we started the lathe first and ran that as a flywheel
so I took a long roll of 3mm flex and we doubled the cable up. the compressor started ok , so the mini digger was started up to put in a new larger cable.
so in answer your cable might be a little twee but it worked for him for 30yrs.

You are probably correct with me being of touch with the Regs, when i started we were still using VIR cables and porcelain screwit connectors, my son is also an electrician and is always telling me its about time i had new fuseboards, but i am happy with what i have got. with regards to the 45amp fuse i expect if the original poster was to check the current flow on the circuit he would find that a 30amp rewireable fuse was adequate and it was the inductive load that was knocking out the breaker,

Personally I'd look at swapping out the whole board, would give the rest of the house RCD protection, which can and does save lives...

not wanting to throw a spanner in the works but if there is a chance it will eaver have to be inspected the rumer is that from january the consumer unit will have to be metal clad??? plastic ones over heating melting and causing fires apparently?

At the risk of getting my legs slapped (I did C&G as a substation fitter with the 13th Edn regs),if you use a 45A breaker,you should have a 6mm cable.

Things have changed a little since the 13th, for better or for worse...
13th 183 numbered pages A5 size, 17th Amd3 495 numbered pages A4 size!

I agree with you on the part P and 5 day "electrical" scam courses.
I can't believe some if the stuff I've seen installed by these so called competent persons, plastic fuse boards are the last of your worries with all these plastic sparkies about.
To the OP I would get an electrician in for a look before banging in a larger mcb or fuse, even if the cable stands it the fuse board might not.
If you have no RCD's in the house I'd get that sorted first, they really are life savers.
Saying all that I only have a bit of 2.5mm down to my garage! (On a 13amp spur I will add)
