Ok one for the sparkys
Wanting to change consumer unit , currently have no rcd but the following circuits : shower 40 amp
2x 32 amp ring mains
1x16 amp oven
2x6amp lighting


Anyway I already have a new split load cu with 2 x rcds to fit

How should I split the load between the two rcds ? I'm thinking rcd 1 : shower /ring main 1/lighting 1

Rcd 2 :ring main 2/oven /lighting 2

Allso I want to add an outdoor double socket on radial circuit using 2.5 twin and earth and 16 amp Mcb , I'll be wanting to plug in a 110v 3kva transformer this sometimes trips the 32amp type B breaker (inrush current ? ) so can I fit a different type of breaker ? Or should I make the circuit a ring with 32 amp breaker ?

what rating are your new RCDs?

While its being redone you might want to uprate the shower wiring 40a is a little low if you are running electric (as apposed to a power shower) 40a is about 9.5kw.

upstairs lights and downstairs sockets on one rcd downstairs lights and upstairs sockets on the other shower one and oven on other . outside socket taken as a spur of 32 amp ring . make sure u earth bond the gas and water with 10mm earth wire and 16mm between electricity boards earth and your new consumer unit

First off is your new CU metal or plastic? As the plastic ones are now defunct.

I prefer to put upstairs lights with downstairs sockets this way if you trip the downstairs sockets the lights stay on, other than that just split the rest as even as possible.

As for your outside socket you can fit a 20a c type mcb and wire in the way you described with 2.5 T+E, this should hopefully keep your transformer happy.

Cheers guys , yea I realise your supposed to use the metal cased cu now but I bought the new plastic one a couple of years ago . I doubt you can buy the metal casing bare tho and swop over the mcbs / rcds .

Makes perfect sense to have lights/ sockets split as you described .
Can I do the external socket in radial with 2.5 cable and 20 amp type c or do I need a ring or 4mm radial.?

why do u need the outside socket on a separate mcb just spur it off the 32 amp ring and wire in 2.5mm. any earth faults it will knock the rcd off anyhow . keep it simple

So you must have fitted the plastic CU before the new regs came into force

It's not fitted yet built in job from ikea , the cable is only 1.5 MM I think . I think 16 ampp breaker will be suffice

My outside sockets are on seperate MCBs so they can be isolated when not in use.

there wont be any need for a c type with a 32amp breaker just if he fitted a 20 amp

1.5mm u sure? is it gas or electric? I had to run 2 40amp circuits for my ovens

Our 100mm wide oven only requires a 13a supply and was happily running on a normal plug while the kitchen was being done.

Sorry brightspark , it's gonna be easier putting in a new supply for the new outside socket , plus it was tripping the ringmain when I plugged in my tool transformer .

yes plenty of ovens available with 13amp plugs fited now days

Hhotchef it's a domestic built in oven not a commercial catering oven

single ovens are 13 amp. oven and grill that can be both used at once are 16amp or higher it does help to know the facts and load
