Electrical advice please..again

Bought a PIR LED security light, it came pre wired but only 20cm of cable.

So..decided to open it up, remove the short length of cable and replace with what I require to go through the wall to the switch etc.

Have noticed the earth is not connected to anything inside the light unit, is this correct and more importantly safe?

I just imagined a metal cased light unit that sits outside in the weather should be earthed.

It will be above 'touch' height, but not when I am up a ladder adjusting the settings.

I would definitely earth the metal case.

I am not an electrician but I would say it should be earthed only few weeks ago my mate bought an led outside metal cased light and that was the same 200mm tails but not earthed also the electronic circuit box was not fastened inside it WAS glued to the casing but had broken away and it came like that out of the box!

Yes..Thinking of putting a small nut and bolt through the case and a ring connector on the earth.

Need to know if they are legal as they are though, bought it from ebay and concerned it's an import that does not meet standards..would not like to think someone could get killed by not knowing.

Is there the double insulated symbol on it? If not then it should be earthed might be worth asking the seller for a copy of the CE declaration . If it above 2.25m its not that big an issue. Fitting an earth would be a good move but keep the ip rateing or drill the hole in bottom to let the water out!

It's got a small sticker on the back:

Oval, chrome effect with CE and RoHS printed on it, no other markings.

It will be one of the massed produced imports, also suspect it's not been tested to required standards etc etc... but we all know the majority of the cheap electrics off the bay are similar.

Apart from the mentioned issue it's a belting little light using minimal power so once I sort it I will be happy enough.

A double insulated mark is a square inside a square.

If you want to add an earth, drill and tap a hole then screw (Brass) bolt/pin in from outside, fit a nut, then your ring crimp and another nut. Put a smear of sealant over the bolt head.

Clean any paint off where the earth connects to the case.

At the top of the box it looks like the "stem" going to the light is held on with a large nut. You could use a brass eyelet between and earth to that. That would mean no drilling, less chance of water ingress.

I have a large ring connector that will fit under the cable securing nut once I have cleaned the area so that will save drilling more holes in it.

No such mark visible, think I will mention this to the seller and see how they react.
