Hello AJL,
the 'conventional' cross wind approach is a bit like opposite lock in a sliding car.

A moment before the flare, the pilot kicks the aircraft straight in line with the runway and touches down asap. If he kicks it too early, the aircraft will drift off the runway centre line. Do it too late and you land sideways, potentially taking off the landing gear! They tend to always get it right.
The other option not used by commercials is to fly "out of balance *" with one wing down to counter the drift and rudder keeping the nose straight. It feels strange and of course passengers may think that the wing down will hit the runway. Personally I prefer to approach wing down, but it does depend on circumstances, the aircraft and the whim of the day.
I took the train across the Nullarbor a few years ago and that was quite an experience. It was pilled by a couple of huuuuge great diesels and I'm rather pleased it was!
Having said that, EV aside, it would have been a great way to spend a couple of weeks, I just think I would have preferred not to have the added stress of the limited range of an EV.
I'm sure they'll get there...
...Eventually.
In this part of the world, you use the car heater a lot.
Heating the car uses the waste heat from the engine, so has no effect of fuel economy,
I wonder what effect running the heater for sixty miles, when it is -20F, would have on the electric cars range.
It is not uncommon for someone on a back road to get stuck in a blizzard for days.
Herr Diesel's original compression ignition engine was designed to run on peanut oil...and you could grow Peanuts to turn into Diesel fuel.

We seem to be drifting in and out of politics in this thread.
My god! If it’s tree less are those weeds in the background?Nullabor, Australia. Vast treeless plain. Kind of explains things a bit.
