El cheapo tip tools

Ordered a set of cheap Chinese tip tools. 3 off boring bars in various sizes and one rh cutting tool. Turned up today and to be honest with you they look and feel identical to the stuff rdg sells. Came with 20 tips too! All told it cost me 30 quid with free postage, 1 box of tips from rdg would cost that. I don't expect the tips o be amazing quality but even if they lasted me one job the tools themselves are cheap!!

most jobs can be done with hss tipped tools apart from hard metals like stainless and cast iron. learn to sharpen them

You're right, but my bench grinder Is only about enough for sharpening tungstens, and occasionally I get tips from other sources

I look at the ones from arc regularly but don't pull the trigger because I don't know anyone whos had experience of them. So please do let us know how you fare with your purchase.

I know very little about tipped tooling but surely as long as they hold the insert correctly how bad can they be? Tips and retaining screws are likely to be garbage however.

Sure hss is great and absolutely has its (very well established) place, I find tinkering on the lathe enjoyable. I do not enjoy sharpening hss toolbits. Especially on my terrible grinder which I will replace as soon as a decent one pops up locally.

I have one usable holder and some tips and enjoy the convenience of it.

Haven't got one of those either ......



I'm not expecting miracles from the tip, but if they do a semi decent job of roughing out and I only have to swap a tip for a finishing cut, it saves me decent tips

Can't find the link but good quality HSS inserts are available I read somewhere. Possibly when I was noodling about in a model engineering forum. As an aside, I discovered that model engineers can get curiously snarky with each other online. No idea why?

I was on an model engineering forum and it was a nightmare....every question was answerd by the same 5 know all,s and they would argue till they were blue faced who was right

when I used to go to evening courses machine shop practice at college they were a great bunch of guys who were always helpful and knowledgeable making allsorts of things

I find any sort of model club tends to be like that, likewise with a lot of vehicle clubs, you get the guys that actually run the vehicles and understand te need for sympathetic mods, and you get the purists who's vehicle sits sheeted up for 364 days a year, and gets trailered to a show but will come and give you a mouthful about it not being original and a waste of a vehicle.

Edit, just remembered the club member that approached my old fella at a show and declared that as he had never seen that model of factory tug it was very obviously home made. Even after showing the guy the original brochure from 1960 and the original bill of sale from its first owner,he was adamant that dad was making it up and it was definitely home made and shouldn't have been there taking up space in the class. This guy was showing 8 of the same garden machine, at the same show

Like the OP, I also have some RDG tools, and tbh I also cannot tell any difference in cutting performance. The only downside is I can't find a left hand tool on amazon for a similar price.

For the price, as a hobbyist, you can't go wrong IMO.
