When it comes to tipped tooling and spare inserts, I use a company called Associated Production Tooling, in Glasgow. They do all the well known name makes but they also do their own brand which are very good. They aren't neccesarily ridiculously cheap but I think they are good value for money. They do tool holders too, and end mills, drills etc.

The above aside, I think I'm going to get some inserts from Bang Good and give them a try. This is after seeing Doubleboost's extensive review of the face mill cutter. After all, when you get inserts from RDG etc, they are getting them from the same Chinese factories but putting their mark up on them.

Someone asked me to make a few pulley wheel for them i said no problem but you will have to buy me some new tools for the lathe.

Hopefully these will be ok.

And added a couple of these to the list . One tool holder is a nightmare.

Very nice. Got some new Dickson QCTP holders myself recently. Chinese, but good quality. No issues for what I'm doing with them.

Tangential tool holder with HSS and crobalt bits takes the place of several tipped tools, and is a good choice for anyone starting out, and who can spend 5 minutes with a bench grinder once in a while to sharpen tool bits. HSS tends to cut nicer on smaller machines, and provides a nicer finish than tipped.

I did Google a tangential tool holder . Just out of interest but what advantages does it have over a conventional one.

Where did you get the chinese Dickson type, I need a few more


@dazza my advice, try not to have too many different types of insert...you can garuntee when you run out itll be the one you need you have not got. Select a couple to suit and keep stock

I got the Dickson type from RDG tools. They are for the QCTP on my Harrison M250. It's an original Dickson and they fit perfectly.

Re the comment about running out of inserts and not having the right one if you have too many different varieties:- I have tried to standardise on CCMT, which is pretty much all I use, apart from the odd bit of HSS that I use for the occasional oddball thing.

It depends on the holder you use. It's simple to grind, just a single operation, and to reset to centre height. There's a chap in Sweden that makes holders from large blocks of steel which replace a conventional tool post. They're extremely rigid and he takes huge cuts without issue. However, his Boxford is quite unusual.

Addjunkie..I can't quote your post properly, but if you need the next size up toolholder, RDG do them too. It's called a T2. Takes a 20mm size tool and is sold for Colchester Student/Master type machines.

I got that turning set from Chronos a few years ago. It was and is really good. I've since started using bigger holders but still use CCMT inserts pretty much exclusively.

I went with the cheapest holder and tips I could find on eBay.

They have been brilliant, it's my go to RH turning too.

Received the tools today they seem ok. Turned some EN8.

The boring bar has two flat sides when i clamp on these its at a steep angle??

What should be the intended use for these two?

One of the tool holders has gone walk about but i did get a new chuck and some drill bits. Like the chuck apart from its myford on a boxford .

Not sure on the drill bits its probably because i drilled up to 13mm with carbide bits then switched to these.

I have had a britool socket set for 45 years .a few got lost so I made them up from a few that I got of ebay second hand . I paid more for the second hand ones than new ones which aren't anywhere as good . and I have a few of the new ones and theres no comparison to quality
