Earth lead

We'll I just replaced the standard earth lead and clamp on my 151 turbo and really can't believe the difference it has made. Arc is much more stable, settings aren't as "fiddly", and it doesn't seem anywhere near as fussy about where the earth is in relation to the weld.

I used a 200amp clamp (the physical difference is quite obvious) and joined the original into a dinse panel plug. Other advantage is the cable is now much longer. Would definitely recommend doing it.

i did this with my sealey. Went up a cable size, added a metre length to it and put a massive 400a clamp on it when i did the euro torch conversion. Turned it into an entirely different welder

Was just about to create a post asking about changing the Earth Lead on my Clarke 160EN, I changed the clamp and fitted a 200Amp job. What Earth Cable did you use and where from?

i get all my welding cable from Cromwell. Just determine what size you already have, measure in cross sectional area like normal leccy cable, then i always go up a size if in adding a bit of length too. Will need the crimped lug to go in the machine and onto the earth clamp. Just crimp both ends and put it on the machine or you could do a dinse plug conversion if you have a euro torch too, makes transport easier imo

I got a cable and clamp from WW and some dinse plugs off the net. I had to also get a lug fitting with screw down clamp to go on the back of the dinse as I couldn't figure out how to make a good crimp connection without the tool. For me if was worth replacing the lead as well as the earth clamp because the original one was ridiculously short.

I just cut the existing lead inside the machine about 6" from where it splices into the big coil and clamped the lug on there. The dinse panel female fitted into the welders body perfectly.

I found and used some "hammer on" lugs foursome earth leads in work a few weeks ago, they seemed to work well, just put the cable in and strike the top of the lug with a hammer.

WW is that Wellington Welding? I have a local one? Thought they only did ready made cables which I don't need.

No it is welders warehouse. I think they have ready made (15ish) and clamps only. Cost me about 20 incl all the plugs I think.

What size of Dinse plug did you go for? I really need to get a longer earth on my 160TM.

I will have to take a look when I'm back. I remember buying both a panel mount one which I used and a female one to go on a bit of lead. 10mm sq seems to ring a bell.
