Anybody know the state of things wrt licence to drive renewals ?
I'm 70 in a few months & have to replace the existing one . We have heard big horror stories of them sending out the replacement licence minus most of the categories that were on the old licence including towing a trailer or caravan . Comments most welcome .

Me too though I will need to replace it soon as it has just about fallen to bits. Since lock down the local council tip will only take a photo licence as ID so I can't book in visits to the tip now.I still have my paper one

My father who is now 89 lost all his entitlements including motorcycle when he did his. Sorry this is probably not helpful to you but as others have said, get a notorised copy!
AT 70 you must renew your licence.

Even being a police motorcycle instructor did not protect him from having to resit his motorcycle test.
Before sending ensure your licence is active on the view a licence webservice.
Then at least its on the computer system.
Some did not get computerised & the paper copies got destroyed.

Took three months to renew my licence, I didn't have a photo licence, so it was further aggravated by having to get a photo and include a birth certificate, marriage certificate and N.I. number. The licence arrived a week after they returned my certificates. I'd advise keeping a copy of your licence and sending a self addressed Special Delivery envelope for them to return any certification, if you're required to include it.
Time was going on and we were beginning to worry a bit. All previous categories were included on the new licence but the photo on the card now looks nothing like me, nor my avatar.

You can renew your licence on the website, if you do you will lose certain categories, there is a warning about this on the DVLA site, (make sure it is the proper DVLA site, there are some scam sites,) renewing your licence at 70 is free, and you are much better doing it by post, when they receive your application, you should receive a letter which gives you entitlement to keep driving until you actually receive your licence. You should keep all your categories that don't require you to take a medical.
If any of your categories are removed you are still entitled to drive those vehicles as the law states "Holds, has held and is not disqualified from holding", you should also see this stated on your Car/Bike etc Insurance.on your, (except those which require a medical or other qualification) also keep your old licence, even though they ask you to cut it in two and post it to them, this old licence will validate your entitlement to drive certain vehicles.
There is also a 10 year period to reclaim a licence once held, before you need to retake a driving test for that vehicle.
If you have any problem contact your MP (they must be good for something).
One other thing, it may look like you have lost categories, but check, for instance a full Motorbike licence is A, which covers all the other m/c groups A1 A2 which will have nothing marked against them, etc
