Not sure why you are renewing yours.

It was changed as others have said. When they were first introduced it was a one off declaration, then they changed it to an annual thing and then they changed it back to a one off in 2013.
Was quite a kerfuffle about it at the time, especially for those of us with lots of crusty bangers restoration projects, and an utter PITA to keep on top of it when it went yearly.

Correct - you don't have to now. But when they brought it in, you did.

I guess they do - to the best of their ability.

most of my vehicles are Historic and so MOT exempt, maybe that makes a difference? but it was insurance they pulled me up on!

I have a JCB 3CX . Tax exempt but it is insured. No MOT needed it must be roadworthy though ( to be driven on roads) the road worthyness is down to me.

Even though something might be tax exempt, you still have to tax it to use it on the road.

Strictly speaking it's not tax exempt, it still needs it but it's zero rated.

I've seen a few cars advertised as tax/MOT exempt - but when you look them up, that's not what the record says - I think some think it happens automatically.

I have a 1990 BMW R80RT sat in my domestic garage - that was sorned in 2004.

I too have never "re sorned" it...?

Have you received an updated V5 in the last 21 years? Try checking the vehicle details online and see if it is shown as SORN or not Taxed, I just checked two of my vehicles and one shows SORN and the other "Untaxed, due 1st January 1983."

This is my fathers motorcycle, put in my name once restored and re-registered, remaining in my name at the same address since 1982 and has not been ridden or taxed for over 40 years.
Back in 2016 l looked out the V5 as I was wondering about the SORN declaration as DVLA had sent updated V5's for all my vehicles Taxed or on SORN but nothing for the motorcycle. (I was also worrying they may have taken the registration!) A phone call to DVLA produced a duplicate up to date V5 without paying the £25.

My understanding of the SORN system when introduced is the database used currently taxed vehicles and V5 address or keeper changes moving forward, hence my fathers motorcycle ducked under the radar.

I am certain if the bike was parked in the street and reported, the tax back to January 1983 would be due.

There is a date where if it wasn't taxed when they brought it in, it doesn't require SORN- one of mine fits into this.

ln 1993 I was waiting for an insurance cover note for a smashed up car l rebuilt and was stopped. Went to court and was fined plus back tax to when I bought the car but the judge reduced everything to the minimums as l appeared and plead my case well.
