DVI Cable

• Circuit boards & components all clean of dust? I clean mine out every year (use a natural bristle 1/2" paint brush). Dust is the electronic equivalent of rust.

It niggles the hell out me when something electronic looks like it should work, but won't!

I'll try every which way with it, and when there's no options left...

I escalate things to a whole new level; probes, soldering iron & a damn good thrashing. If it still refuses to work... after a few of those torture sessions... it's ready for recycling.

I clean mine out regularly too as it's in a very dusty atmosphere. Vacuum cleaner on blow does it, then on suck to clean the carpets afterwards.

Googled "DVI won't work" and someone's got the same problem with a Radeon card!

I'm always disgusted by that kind of news! Should at least do what it says on the tin...

I've always built my own boxes and make sure that the hardware has good reports from other users first. Not cutting edge tech. but; new, open source, with good oem support, v.good performance, tried & tested. Check the specs on your new box, before you get it ...eh?

If vacuum cleaners & compressed air worked for dusty circuit boards, the wind & rain will wash my van... They don't! The only way to prevent tracking and related component failure, on dusty circuit boards, is to get in there; break the box down, and mechanically shift the grog.

Cutting edge tech - such a bad investment - it depreciates too fast!

I used to do the same for a living, after years of working as a service engineer on every type of DP equipment from mechanical adding machines to mainframes since 1970 but got fed up with it so I let the guy down the road do it, it's just not worth the hassle.

As for the new box, it will be built to my specs.

There's some good experiences you must have acquired right there rtb...

It's not the money; it just rubs me! I learnt to do it from constant component failures and the necessary expense it causes over many years. If it's in my space, as a tool - it better perform, or it's in the bin...

We often forget about component reliability hours and use old stuff only to find that things have lost ions /ionized and do not quite perform as they should or get some sort of failure over the extra extended useage time.

For years 1966 to 2001 I'd spend hours .... drawing out circuits , testing ,measuring & repairing things , then as often as not two months or so later often have the owner come back bitching that it had failed as before and blamed me for not doing a proper job .

I gave up repairing things electronic about 10 years ago , both for myself and other people .. life is much better now.

Substitue "marbles" for "ions" and I think that applies to most of us!

Not just me then! Apart from anything else labour is so expensive compared to buying a new one. Also getting a new replacement gives you a new warranty and the latest technology too.

Most problems with computers are software oriented, otherwise it's a case of swap the big bits, no more fault-finding down to component level.

I'm glad someone brought this subject up! I have the self same problem with a PC i built this week. The only difference is this one is new with all new components.

Graphics card ATI Radeon HD 5670 (pci express)
Monitor Samsung syncmaster Bx2235

All updated graph card drivers and supposed to support XP which I'm running.


The graph card has VGA and DVI ports, the monitor only has one input, DVI input.

Plug in the VGA analog lead all works, then go plug the in the VDI lead and erm dead. The monitor does seem to be seeing the vdi cable when plugged in as the 'no signal warning' disappears. That said it does have a box appear flashing from 'analog' to 'digital' which sort of says its not seeing something.

I can find nothing in any documentation to say the VDI has to be switched on, bit of a loss with it now after a lot of searching for answers.

Any suggestions appreciated including throw it, and myself in the pond.......... still plugged i the mains of course

How do you plug a VGA lead in if the monitor only has a DVI port?

Well that was a question i wanted answering too! It seems looking at the pin out VDI is also wired for analog. If you take a look at that wiki it seems to indicate that being true. But I'm a electronics Muppet..... so i don't know lol


I tested my lead and ermmmmm well i have pins 3,6,11,19 and 24 dead plus the single long pin at the end dead also. This is what is called a ummmmmm DVI-D (Duel link) style. I'm trying to find the correct pin out diagram to see whats what with that particular style.


I did try many different search terms and seemed to find everything but! Will try again.

I have just remembered the graph card has another port which is HDMI....... not being at all familiar with all the latest stuff, should i be connecting through that one or the VDI?

That WIKI shows all the combinations and associated pinouts, your cable seems a bit odd, maybe it's a cheapo where they reckoned they could get away without connecting screens and earths, although there does seem to be a clock signal missing too!

Hmmm... could be an interface issue...

There are three main kinds of DVI connections which are available; DVI-D, DVI-A, and DVI-I. DVI-D is the ‘true’ digital format. It is the normal format used for connecting digital LCD monitors to DVI graphics cards. DVI-A is the analog version of DVI; it is used to carry a signal from a DVI graphics card to an analog display, for example a CRT monitor. There is a digital to analog conversion applied here, but this still gives higher-quality results than a standard VGA cable. Finally, there’s DVI-I, the integrated format which caters for both digital and analog equipment. This doesn’t convert a pure DVI-D output to something a DVI-A device can use. But it will act as a DVI-D cable or a DVI-A cable according to your needs. The dual link varieties provide twice as much power and deliver the data more rapidly than the single link kind. [1]



I wonder if you both need a specific DVI cable interface? The DVI-I (dual link) interface offers all the bells & whistles the connection could want.

From that WIKI HDMI signals are compatible with DVI, you need an adaptor cable. Look in Mapli, CPC &c

Same here, I'm using the DVI-D to DVI-D cable (the one thats not working)

I guess my main question is, is my cable at fault with the dead pin numbers i mentioned. 3,6,11,19, 24 and the what seems to be an earth the Single rectangular pin also being dead......... that should have continuity. Pins 3 ,11 and 19 the diagram says they are shields, so should they have continuity or not? The other two 19 and 24 no idea if they should or should not.

It's a process of elimination, if i can say the cable is good then i know to look at software/hardware.

I would definitely try another cable. On mine all but pin 24 are connected. Looking at the pinout diagram I would say that is wrong, but I've had 2 cables the same and Knoba has checked one of his (which works) and pin 24 is also open circuit.

The wide blade is also connected through on mine.

Mine is the duel link, so if i can get the darned thing working to would be good.

Taken a look in maplins and 26 quid for a lead. They used to be so good before they became commercialized...... sighhhh.

My local computer shop sold me one for £3, they're about £7 from CPC (subject to handling & postage charges for small orders)
