Durafix easyweld.... Your experiences...

Hi everyone
I am an authorised distributor for Durafix Easyweld and am curious to hear your thoughts and experiences about the product....
Have you used it? If not, why not?
Did it work?
Where did you hear about it?

I really am trying to understand the level of awareness for this product throughout the aluminium welding industry and your comments would be appreciated....

I keep seeing it and really want to give it a go, just not got round to it. I think there is a place for it in the market but in some respects over the years I have thought it too good to be true type product. Also I have a tig capable of welding whatever I require.

I do intend to buy some, when? not sure yet. If I had some then I know I would find a need for it but since I have non then I am finding my way without it...

this has been on my radar for a while, but havn't got around to getting any, there appear to be a couple of types, with and without flux.

If they do work then its a hell of a lot cheaper than getting a tig!!

After seeing a thread about it on here I bought some, and I've had it sitting in my garage for a few weeks now, but I've not got 'round to using it yet.

The plan is to 'weld' a mounting bracket back on to the bottom of a Honda Blackbird radiator.

Nothing has stopped me using it other than my own lack of ability to organise my time better!

I will let you know what happens when I try it...

I've tried it! Seemed runny and difficult to get thickness in the joint without a bit of practice and technique, but with practice it seemed perfectly strong when applied on a horizontal surface. Handy to have around.

Odd the way it's being distributed though. Can't see that working. Don't know why they don't get it into big stores.

its sold on ebay and at autojumbles and shows .mainly people who repair machinery and old motorcycles and cars model engineering shows . its a limited market / can just imagine b and q selling it to punters who havent a clue on most things . staff with an orange bib on with there name felt tipped on in case they forget who they are givin duff info out

I used it to stick a filler neck on an alloy rad. Unfortunately the filler neck is very thin and it has melted where the cap should seal onto it. I have tried twice with the same result both times. It might or might not seal but I'd rather not find out at a trackday.

Getting it hot enough to melt the rods was tricky because the metal was so thin. I think I'll try a brass neck, if I can't find one or stick it on another alloy one and someone with a TIG will be the solution.

ive had this on my fleabay watch list for a while but havent got round to buying it as i dont do much ali work,
however i'm gonna make an ali sump guard for my enduro bike and think this product would do the job.

i just need to get round to buying the stuff.

will let you know how it goes.

We used some years ago to replace a broken fairing lug on a motorbike frame. It did the job and was still holding when the bike was sold a few years later.

edit 392 c apparently or somewhere between 300 and 400 depending what you read

Thanks so much everyone for your comments. It's great to hear your thoughts on the product and the way it's brought to Market. I have tried to get it stocked in the large "sheds" but they don't deal with companies promoting single product lines, meaning I have to try and get in with a distributor who currently supplies said sheds... It's political and doesn't favour small businesses, let's leave it at that. I Amin talks though, so we'll see.
On a different note, if any self employed welder, or welding business on this forum, would like to try a FREE trial rod... Then please email me your details and I'll send you a pack to try. The only thing I ask is you get beack to me with your comments.... Can't be fairer than that?

Oh, and just to answer one more question.... I tend to use mappro torches or propane for the smaller jobs. Both are fine and can give great results unless you're welding larger mass items.
Just for your info, here's a bracket I made with easyweld... The joint is stronger than the ally itself so it does the trick well...

nice weld but use a finer file and a proper countersink bit to finish the bracket

Agreed! The bracket was made in about 15 mins and it's purpose was to show the Durafix weld... It's not actually going to be used for anything. I may finish it off though.... Just for cosmetic appeal....

Got a mapp gas bottle and a Bernzomatic TS7000 to use as a heat source.
Tried heating the ali for ages, but could not get the durafix to melt and fill the hole.

Had better results on 2 mm ali sheet though.

if your torch couldnt heat to temperature it would be because the ally is disipating the heat away . pack round it with broken soft grey breeze blocks to retain the heat or use a larger torch

Or preheat in the oven for 20 mins.

The above bracket is 4mm sheet, and it took about 5 mins to bring up to temp using a ts7000 torch and propane. I have used it on thicker sheet with good results, but the more mass you have, the more dissipation occurs. A more intense heat source would help here, and so would the above suggestions. I did try heating a small block outside, and the wind cAused the work to cool as quickly as it was being heated, so all these factors need to be considered. Keep trying though....

Would you say this is better than tig rods cause thats what I use with my oxy acetylene?
