Drones and their uses

Went to corner shop earlier on the noon,saw this guy with a box in his hand and then noticed summat on the floor,one of those drones you see blokes flying.

I leant against the steel barrier at the kerbside watching what he was doing,he hovered the drone just above the gutter on the length of this building and then brought it back down.
I walked up to him and started talking to him about what he was doing,apparently he owned the building and was checking his gutters out to see if they needed cleaning and also was inspecting the roof for any damage tiles.
He told me its best piece of kit he's ever owned for checking out his roof and gutters on his properties,he said when I've been interested in purchasing a building there has been twice where I couldn't get access to the property inside and a completely smashed window on the back of the property has given me access to it with the drone only one door in the property was closed and that was the kitchen and in the other property was the bathroom door.

He had two cameras on the drone one for remote close work ie visual on a laptop and the other for recording the flying access.

Now thats pretty usefull stuff.

He is getting away with it at present but I think there will be a serious tightening of the laws regarding drones, he was probably breaking the 500 metre (I think) public area zone doing what he was doing if you were standing watching.

They certainly have their uses though, coast guards searching cliffs is one I saw suggested, so much cheaper than using the helicopter.

there a good thing and there also a menace and danger to public and pilots . laws need to be passed quick before there serious accidents model aircraft have brought light planes and hangliders down before

I daresay that if a guy like him is using it in a manner of responsibilty it will be overlooked? it was a three story dwelling.

Yes there are.

My mate has a commercial licence and uses it for house and property surveys and to check farming land. It's a side business but he reckons he's made around £10k in the last year for around 40 days of work.
Serious kit, though, not a Maplins £39.99 job...

Bloke in barrow got prosecuted after his camera equipped model plane decided it didn't want to do aerial imaging of walney channel anymore and wandered off on its own. Problem is it wandered toward the shipyard, which happens to be a nuclear site with a no fly exclusion zone. Big problems with that one

As far as I know the rules/laws are:

You must be able to see it with the naked eye.
If camera equipped, it must not be within 50 meters of people or buildings.
If camera equipped, it must not be within 150 meters of large groups of people.
You need permission from the CAA to fly one commercially.

I'd always thought a drone was an autonomous device, but the meaning seems to have been changed now so I'll try to control myself .

Portsmouth isn't a nuclear site as such, (unlike Devonport which has proper licensed nuclear status and a no fly zone over the sub refit complex part of the dockyard)

Pompey is a bit like Gib I think which although can berth nuclear subs isn't actually a nuclear licensed site.

Pizza delivery seems to be the favourite at the moment. The US Marines have been using a slightly bigger version for delivering up to 6000lb of kit, the unmanned Kaman K-MAX helicopters with a 94% success rate for delivery in Afghanistan apparently. I think that's better than Pizza Hut or Dominoes!

If you find yourself unhappy with one, do not do what this man did. Had it come down on other people he would not have been so smug.

I have also read of them being shot at.......the question there remains ?Where does the projectile go after it misses the drone?

If it's a shotgun it travels to the end of its arc and by the time it lands the shot has all the power of hailstones

That is a problem with gravity what goes up will eventually come down, if you read some of the books on the Falklands war, when the foe was flying up the sound and the boys opened fired, the spent round (bullet), coming down around the trenches.
