Hi folks,
I'm new, but I promise I did search first!
I'm after some advice if you gents would be so kind?
I have a need to cut 2" and 2.5" holes in 8mm mild steel (possible in 8mm stainless too) to make some exhaust flanges.
I have some bosch carbide hole saws (after using them and reading the comments on here I which I'd bought the screwfix ones) and whilst they're nice and sharp the torque required to spin them seems fierce.
The speed requirements are <200rpm in mild and <100 rpm in stainless.
The mains drill doesn't have the low speed torque or control so I've been using an hitachi 18v drill in low gear, but even with only ~1kg load on the cutter it's very hard on the drill and frequently snatches. I really don't think the gearbox will last at this rate.
I've been looking at bench drills on ebay and this is where I need some advice regarding torque and speed.
The battery drill is supposed to produce 31 ft.lb of torque (which seems a lot to me), but clearly is nowhere near enough. Bench pillar/drills don't seem to be rated like this, but how many watts/hp would I need?
Regarding speed, I can't seem to see anything that goes down to anything like 100 rpm. Even old stuff like warco and Meddings seem to be 400rpm minimum. Am I missing something?
Thanks!
Anthony
