It's not for dowels. Simply to drill holes at right angles to the piece, instead of using a pillar drill.

Ahm the Axminster one is worth a look.
Can also get them with a chuck fixed to a bearing and chuck your drill up to the chuck

Keep meaning to grab one for when I have to make floating shelves

Looking at that Axminster one, it wouldn't work with the 12V drills. They don't have a collar. Think I may bite the bullet & get one of those above, so you'll likely hear me bitching in a week or two about how crap it is.

You might want to look for the Parkside (Lidl) drilling jigs, they had a decent set a year or so ago which do what you want and more. Can only find the video below to show them in use and the guy is showing them being used for drilling holes in cylindrical items but they are worth a look, the one you are looking at in the first post to has way too many wee bits to lose!

The guides not deep enough or a slightly sloppy fit, I assume?

I've got the small Big Gator guide (MDG1000NP) and they are precise in the hole sizes, i.e. no slop, but you do need to clamp them down or the nature of the drill flutes results in some wobble. I can just about manage on wood holding it by hand or foot. I think with the large size clamping would be essential.

I dont know, I was suprised and disapointed. I had it clamped and I was only drilling wood.

If find they get lost, on site. Cheaper and quick enough to knock them up as required

I have a piece of MET bar (earthing terminal) that I use for that job. 6mm holes, but running them through at 8mm or 10mm doesn't take long on the drill press.
And they only cost a couple of quid apiece.

addendum: they're brass, rather than steel. but that also makes them a cheap useful source of brass bar for "projects"

Or buy the hardened guides and make your own, I use them for drilling jigs, only a few quid each and very accurate, available in every size you can imagine

I just use an inch thick piece of steel I have drilled numerous holes through in a pillar drill (tapping size, actual size. going from 4 to 10mm).
