Dreaded DPF filter problems on 66 plate LR Discovery sport tech

I seem to recall reading that the dpf on these discos is too far away from the engine to get hot enough for "normal" driving to do the heat-cleaning ?

I sometimes lust after a modern diesel suv but on checking reviews, the dpf issues always stop me. I'll stick with my pre-dpf cars for now.

What price for an actual new dpf ? Not a recycled one.... Are oem or pattern New ones actually available or do prices mean its reconditioned-only

Very expensive, in excess of a grand.
It‘s usually not the DPF that fails though, too many short journeys combined with a problem with emissions is what causes most problems, there is a criteria in order to get the DPF to regenerate, I’m being BMW specific here but any faults registered with the glow plugs or glow plug module will inhibit a regen.
Non DPF cars cost a bloody fortune to tax now, I’ve an X5, think it’s over £580 per year, my 1 series which I use to get to work and has a DPF I think is around £3O per year.
I wouldn’t buy a modern diesel unless I was doing at least one longish journey every couple of hundred miles to allow an active regen to take place

Dpf issues can be an **** to sort, I managed to fix the first one on my old transit with the help of the internet and mates snap on diagnostic to force 2 re gens, got 2 yrs before it reared its head again along with other related codes.

Took it to a diesel specialist of some 40yrs, new injectors, 3 days back on again, off to another, stretched chain, common at mileage I was at, new chain and sprockets replaced, back on again a week later, re Set faults and drove it for 5 months having to re set faults with bt obd reader and phone.

Fixed in the end by replacing the van

I note in your comments SG66 you eventually had to sell on your van to avoid the problems. I hope I don’t get to that stage, I quite enjoy driving my LR when working properly. RonA

Got no issue with you wanting to repair it cheaply.

But just stating without correct diagnosis (software or people using it) on newer vehicles is never a good point.

My L200 did a dpf regen without fail on my fortnightly trip from Hull to Leeds, this was usually once on the M62 at constant speed and revs

With torque pro I could see the exhaust temp go up to around 650 degrees!

I just did what the wife said to do in the first place, had I listened I would have saved best part of 2k, that's without the 20mpg hit keeping dpf clean, mind it was never great on diesel

I do too many miles a year now to run an old van, I don't mind the welding but can't be arsed digging round the faults, I have 0 interest in that, prob because I spend so much time in the thing, I just want to lock the gates close the door and not see it again till I have to

This reminded of an incident in the forest, a digger working on site decided it was time for a regen. The old boy on the digger bailed, had no idea what was going. I found it odd as the diggers are worked flat out all day long

I've also read that by about 90k miles, dpfs will simply be full of ash and beyond the capability of a regen to fix. (?)
So presumably thats why so many cars are for sale at 80k miles, leaving the no-doubt-expensive fixing of the problem to the next owner...

I've got the last of line Freelander 2 Sd4 with DPF. Never a single issue with it. Now on 86k miles.

I had a Freelander 2 - thought it would be rubbish but it was incredible. Amazing on ice and snow. Better than my Defender. Also the best car I have ever driven on wet roads - no aquaplaning unlike the new Rangerovers and discos etc - their tyres are too wide.
Only things I didn't like - steering too light and seat squabs a bit short - other than that is was brilliant. Had the top of the range with all the toys - about 2010 I think. Had it for a year on hire/lease.

I had a FL2 commercial, great bit of kit - fitted some spare Disco4 seats in it (the seat metalwork is dimensionally the same) made it much more comfortable on drives around UK & Europe, as mentioned pretty trouble free bar a corroded wire on the back of the alternator and great in the wet, snow & ice.

The second time the Terraclean came, he actually took the car out with his gear connected, so he may have been monitoring the live data. Unfortunately the guy who comes is not very forthcoming & doesn’t volunteer any information more than he thinks he needs too.

Hes keeping quiet, 1 as its his living why give away info that will do him out of work? or 2 hew winging it with a bit of clear and go!
To be fair sometimes you have to clear and go to see what codes come back as fresh as you can have loads of historic junk adding confusion, dealer tool will date the codes, aftermarket might not so you have no idea whats new and whats old.
Also dealer tool will say this is your code, for example dpf pressure sensor knacked, then it may tell you what to check and what the readings/values should be, after meaket are a lot vaguer!

Where is the dpf? underneath or crammed into the engine bay.

Does the car use an extra injector for the regen? I think some fords do this and they have issues with the extra injector.

Im sure there was a sheet from LR stating what to recommed to the customer depending on what they are going to use the car for, ie petrol/v diesel, and to avoid some models used for short journeys as dpf so far from engine it can never reach operating temp.

How do you know when it is regenerating? I had my 2014 2.0 diesel Astra for 4 years and never saw or even heard anything like a regen. It was the only car I have owned that had a dpf. The Mrs now has a 2015 Ford Kuga so we are expecting this to have issues at some point! My 1987 90 will carry on until it is banned

I'm a good bit short of that, and don't mind the cars.
It's just all the ******** that goes with it.
Managers and customers who want the moon on a stick for next to nothing, and often yesterday.
'Technicians' who you wouldn't trust with kids candy, let alone anything more advanced than a lawnmower.

The longer I'm in the trade, the more I think there should be a registration and testing scheme for anybody charging to work on other peoples vehicles.
However the push back from the trade would be huge, as it would highlight just how many incompetent and/or dishonest people are out there charging people to 'fix' vehicles.

How do you know, the Disco knows or the guys from Terraclean know that the matrix ISN’T blocked?

A torch and the mk1 eyeball probably is your best option.

But the motortrade is not to be enjoyed just tolerated.
