If you REALLY need the 3.5 tonnes tow capacity there's only one solution, dare I say it Land Rover 110 or 130 Double cab pick-up.
Not as comfortable and car like (bit of an understatement here) as the Japanese stuff but does the job in a workman like manner. All comes down to performance over comfort I suppose and your priorities.

But whatever you do give the ranger a miss! as from what my mate (who deals in four wheel drives) tells me the ranger is truly aweful for towing, the duel mass flywheels self destruct extreamly quickly once you start useing them to tow!

true but then disco's arn't crew cabs though.
Early ish Rangers had very low power engines, I believe the later ones have the newer direct injection engines.
Either way I would go for the Isuzu, been around for years and together with Daihatsu were the only real alternative to the Landy's when used for proper work.
Rangers are cheaper though so it is a price trade off.
The nissans and Mitsi's aren't bad, again the newer engines are much more economical if you can afford a late one.

when we were talking about pickups i thought he specified crew cab as he wanted 5 seats which the disco has but maybe i have mis interpreted him
the only pickup i would buy would be a hilux
remember the old one of top gear
i also think its the best looking of the pickups
all academical really as id never move from landrover
just put a new water pump on my landy
£22 and 1 hours work
on a pickup truck you could probably add a 1 at the start and a few more hours work

200 quid difference in price between a ranger xlt and isuzu denver max

i will test afew before making desisions
thinking double cab because i want to cart the kids and its gonna be a workhorse round the farm
our oldish diahatsu fourtrak is nearing the end now and i've always been fed up of crap in the "boot" when it could be outside

ford ranger max towing wieght is 3 ton plus tackograph for business use
landys 110 130 double cabs are the only ones to tow 3.5ton on over run brakes
4 ton with linked brakes only legally
but still need tacko for business use
you could always buy a unimog black edition (Brabus) tows up to 29 tons

I did about 50K in a Nissan Navarra (D22?) as a "works" car, well equipped and comfortable. Had best part of a tonne of wire in the back with no problems. Think it can only tow 2800kg though.
