the problem ive seen with that is people tend to fill the hole without any real penetration on the parent metal

What thickness wire did you use?
Definitely looks like the higher voltage gets better coverage.
0.6mm. Thought the tip voltages might help give a comparison to your machine as mine is 215A, 34v was setting 7/12. Here's a photo I took sometime back of a spotweld torn apart.
