Hi guys (said with sigh and sad tone)
I was planning on beginning the welding process of new inner arches tonight.
I used some inch box (flap disked clean) and some 1mm ish with 8mm holes drilled for plugs.
No matter what setting I use I cannot get the plug weld strong enough that is will make a hole when i twist the parts apart. they are very pretty welds - and i even seem to get some heat coming out the other side, just not going through.
I have a Clarke 135TE and I'm using 0.6mm wire (this I hope is the problem) and I'm using Argon/Co mix. At this stage I intend welding the inner wing which i'm guessing is 1mm or 0.8 to the chassis leg which is probably 2mm max (It's a Mk1 Astra GTE)
I've got it up to full blast (Max 2) and I have to have the wire feed at 9 to get a decent sound going.
Setting Max 1 which wire at 8 seems to make the nicest noise (Max 2 seems very aggressive sounding).
I'm very new to welding so I recorded the sound:
The best I can get when twisting the parts apart is maybe 0.5mm of the back to come out - I can't make it so that there's a hole in one part and the plug left on the other part. I end up with a lot of material on top but when you turn the piece over, you can see it hasn't properly melted all the hole.
I popped into Halfords on the way home to pick up a 0.8mm tip and some 0.8mm wire to try out...
Any advice welcome
